History of Xi'an H-20

To keep pace with the United States and other major military powers, China is pursuing a strategic stealth bomber program known as the Xi'an "H-20". Expect this guy to be a subsonic performer centered on a flying wing floor plan. The art concept depicts the aircraft no different from the USAF's Northrop Grumman B-2 "Spirit" stealth bomber (described in detail elsewhere on this page), with no vertical protrusions and well-contoured engine intakes mouth and front cockpit section. Assuming that two crew members will be deployed, the bomb load will reach a heavy load.

Of course, there are still many problems with this ambitious bomber design - especially given China's own history of large aircraft design and development and engine development.

The bomber was built by Xi'an Aircraft Industry Corporation for the People's Liberation Army Air Force (PLAAF). It is expected to fly sometime in the 2020s.

The project's goal is primarily to provide the People's Liberation Army Air Force with a long-range domestic bomb platform, a design that is likely to replace the outdated H-6 bomber (also built in Xi'an) still in service. This new attack platform will allow the PLA Air Force to stay away from Chinese shores, especially as the South China Sea becomes a focal point for regional powers.
