The History of the Airbus A220 (Bombardier C-Series)

In mid-2016, Bombardier Canada launched its C-Series aircraft for the narrow-body passenger market. The aircraft was developed from scratch and was due to enter service in 2010. However, this was pushed back to 2016 due to development delays. Currently (2017) there are two main variants - CS100 and CS300. The CS100 entered service in July 2016 via a SWISS launcher, followed by AirBaltic's CS300.

As of December 2016, 13 aircraft have been produced. The C-Series is Bombardier's first commercial fly-by-wire (FbW) aircraft - the result is an exceptionally responsive large aircraft.

The jet family is powered by 2 Pratt & Whitney PW1500G turbofan engines, each providing 18,900 lbs to 23,300 lbs of thrust. Customers can choose from four iterations of the PW1500 series depending on their needs.

The CS100 seats 97 passengers, but future revisions could include up to 135 passengers (in an aisle, two-by-three seating arrangement). It has a range of up to 3,570 miles at speeds of up to 600 miles per hour.

Composite materials, including carbon fiber wings, are used throughout to help manage target operating weight. These specifications challenge directly competing types, such as Embraer's "E-Jet" series.

The CS3??00 is an extended fuselage transcontinental branch of the CS100. Dimensions include a length of 127 feet, a wingspan of 115.1 feet and a height of 37.7 feet. It seats 145 passengers (or 130 in a two-class configuration) and shares about 97 percent of the parts commonality with the smaller CS100 offering. Curb weight is 82,000 pounds, and MTOW is 149,000 pounds.

Compared to the CS100, the range increases to 3,800 miles and the speed remains at 600 mph. His service cap is 41,000 feet. The CS300 is designed to compete directly with larger market types such as the French Airbus A320neo and the American Boeing 737MAX products.

From July 1, 2018, Airbus owns a majority stake in the Bombardier C-Series.
