History of Interstate Aircraft TDR

One of the US military's earliest forays into unmanned attack drone aircraft was the World War II era Interstate Aircraft and Engineering Corporation (IAEC) "TDR" (1939-1945). The main driving force behind its development was the fierce struggle of the United States Navy (USN) against the power of the Japanese Empire.

The aircraft first flew in 1942, at a time when U.S. involvement in the war was increasingthough it didn't officially enter production until September 1944. The aircraft was actively used by the U.S. military against the Japanese in the Pacific, but technical problems and proven conventional solutions ultimately thwarted this novel, forward-looking projectits last days of flight were recorded in October 1944 .

In addition to being used by the USN, the U.S. Army Air Forces (USAAF) considered the TDR program enough to retain several names - the industry has only seen a few prototypes emerge. The concept of the long-range attack aircraft was pioneered by Lieutenant Colonel D.S. Farney and accelerated the development of advanced technology in the shadow of World War I. In April 1942, as the United States was already committed to war in Africa, Europe, and the Pacific, the U.S.

Navy recorded its first successful drone test-fire attack.

Interstate Aircraft, a pre-war airline founded in 1937, was awarded a development contract to continue this work. By 1942, the company had only the S-1 "Cadet", a light, purpose-built high-wing monoplane (though 574 were built for service with the US Air Force).

The company received funding for two prototypes and 100 follow-on carrier-grade production aircraft, which fall under the "TDR" designation.

The original experimental prototype was aptly named "XTDR-1". Work on these airframes culminated in the final production form of the "TDR-1", of which 189 were built to the XTDR-1 prototype standard.

In the TDR arrangement, the aircraft will be flown by specially modified TV-equipped Grumman TBF "Avengers" Navy dive bombers, relying on "novelty" technologies such as radar altimeters and long-range cameras/original forms of communication. A disposable tricycle landing gear helps guide the plane over the ground. Inside, a tubular steel structure supports the fuselage, and a sparse molded veneer covers the entire assembly.

When complete, the TDR has a wingspan of 48 feet and a total weight of 5,900 pounds. The twin-engine arrangement is powered by 2 Lycoming O-435-2 opposed-piston engines, each delivering up to 220 hp, while the twin-blade propellers rotate in a trailer configuration.

The engines are located in the nacelles on the leading edge of the main fuselage of each wing.
