History

In the post-World War II world, North American Airlines made plans for its powerful T-6 "Texas" two-seat basic stand-alone series The successor - the engine trainer. The T-6 was born in 1935, with nearly 15,500 prototypes built and subsequently in service with various operators around the world.

The last batch was not retired by the South African Air Force until 1995 - that's what it's worth. In stark contrast to this storied history, a new design will replace one of America's most successful military trainers.

Shortly after the war, North American companies developed the "XSN2J-1" (company code "NA-142"), a prototype trainer platform that first flew on February 10, 1947. Two of these were built for the U.S. Navy and used in series service.

The two-seat single-engine design was powered by a 1,100-horsepower Wright R-1820-78 "Cyclone" "Cyclone" air-cooled radial piston engine, driving a three-bladed front-mounted propeller unit, more or less conventional in construction at the time.

This guy will be sued for the role of "scouting coach" replacing the aging line of SNJ Texans who were on duty at the time. However, the project was derailed by budgetary concerns and shelved immediately in 1948.

Under this existing framework, the prototype of the T-28 "Trojan" was formed. The North American company developed the "XT-28" (the company name was derived from "NA-159") and first flew the monoplane on September 24, 1949, proving the new and improved design sound.

Two prototypes were completed in the mid-1950s and delivered to Elgin AFB for flight testing by the 3020th Fighter Test Squadron in operational conditions. After that, the design was officially approved and mass production began.

This aircraft continues North America's excellence in providing capable military-grade trainers. The design uses a traditional arrangement, placing the engine in a snug hood in front of the crew compartment.

In the cockpit are two crew members - a student and an instructor - sitting side by side under a light-frame canopy. The fuselage is round and streamlined, the tail is gradually tapered, and the monoplane and low-level installation are arranged horizontally.

The main aircraft is mounted low on the side of the fuselage and has a straight design with a truncated tip. A fully retractable tricycle landing gear completes the list of physical properties of the aircraft.

Commissioned by the United States Air Force (USAF) in 1949, the recast "T-28" was also commissioned by the United States Navy (USN), United States Marine Corps (USMC), United States Coast Guard (USCG) and (in To a limited extent) the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) in time.

Operators of the T-28 eventually went from Argentina and Bolivia to Uruguay and Zaire. In addition to the given training role, the series saw the service as a ground attack platform, primarily during the Vietnam War (1955-1975), where most of the major players were. The French used stocks in the close air support (CAS) role in the operation against Algeria.

The T-28 also played a role in Philippine government forces during a rebel-led coup attempt in 1989.

The original operational version was the "T-28A", these models were sent to the US Air Force and built to standard with the Wright R-1300-7 engine (driving the twin-blade propeller unit), with 1,194 examples. The "T-28B" subsequently became a US Navy-oriented variant, powered by the 1,425 hp Wright R-1820-86A/86B engine, including modifications such as the ventral air brake and three-bladed propeller assembly. The total output of the service reached 489 units.

The T-28C became another USN version with snap hooks and shortened length propeller blades.
