History
The MX2 is a carbon fiber two-seater tandem sport aircraft built by MX Aircraft in Perth, Western Australia. The MX2 is used by competitors in the annual Red Bull Air Race World Championship.
The MX2 is based on the Giles G-202 aerobatic trainer, the first prototype of which was the improved G-202, which first flew in May 2002. The first five aircraft in production flew for the first time in May 2005. The MX2 is a cantilevered low-wing monoplane carbon fiber with full-span ailerons and conventional tail wheel landing gear. It has an enclosed cockpit for two people to use in tandem on reclining seats, and a one-piece canopy.
The MX2 is powered by a 260 hp (194 kW) Lycoming IO-540 six-cylinder engine and a three-blade tractor propeller. Optimized for aerobatics speed and agility, the MX2 can tow a G-load of plus or minus 14 G, allowing for tight turns and loops as well as a range of aerobatic maneuvers.
Rob Holland (pilot) won the 2008 World Senior Aerobatics Championships and the 2018 U.S. National Aerobatics Championships with the MX2.
An MX2 races the Supermarine Spitfire around the Isle of Wight to celebrate the 70th anniversary of the first Spitfire. The Spitfire won.
