History of SIG SG 516 (Assault Rifle Model 516)

The SIG516 continues the AR-15 family of automatic weapons in the proven tradition of operational reliability and ease of use. The SIG516 employs a four-position gas regulator to control its proven gas piston operation and provides a chamber for the widely accepted 5.56x45mm NATO cartridge. The barrel is free-floating for accuracy and nitrided to prevent corrosion. The rifle adopts the classic look and configuration of the AR15/M16 with an integrated pistol grip/trigger assembly and forward magazine slot.

The barrel is encased in a perforated forearm, while the stock can be adjusted to the operator's taste. The long tube section of the M1913 Picatinny rail is located above the receiver and over the forearm, allowing various tactical accessories to be mounted.

Additional rails are located on the sides and under the shield. The flip-up iron front and rear sights are retained. The barrel is closed by a slotted flash suppressor. The construction of the pistol is aluminum, hard anodized.

SIG516 is available in Patrol, Patrol FDE (Flat Dark Earth), OD Green (Olive Drab Green), Carbon and Carbon TS shapes and finishes. The carbon fiber variant includes an Ambi QD pylon, an extended carbon fiber front end, a fixed carbon fiber stock, a clear Lancer 30-round L5 magazine and a tier 2 matching trigger assembly.

The Carbon TS model retains the M16-style adjustable shoulder rest while using the aforementioned extended carbon fork.

SIG 516 is included in the Australian Victoria Police Special Operations Group (SOG) inventory.
