Curtiss SO3C Seamew Story

The Curtis SO3C "Seamew" (Curtis Type 82) was an oft-forgotten naval reconnaissance/reconnaissance/patrol seaplane that was mass produced during World War II. It first flew in 1939 and officially entered service in 1942. The primary users of the system are limited to the US Navy and the Royal Navy (RN) Fleet Aviation (FAA). Approximately 795 SO3C systems were eventually fully produced.

One of their main problems, however, was the choice of Ranger-series engines that powered them - ultimately dooming this type of aviation history. It was considered more or less obsolete in 1944 and was completely decommissioned in 1945.

Their early forms used fixed wheeled landing gear instead of seaplanes as part of an early US Navy requirement in their design.

The origin of the seam

In 1937, the U.S. Navy was looking for a replacement aircraft for its Curtiss SOC Seagull series of biplane seaplanes. The U.S. Navy is looking for a more modern monoplane system that can perform the same role as a seaplane reconnaissance aircraft, but also includes better performance specifications and can operate from land and sea bases as needed.

Therefore, the landing gear must be interchangeable to accomplish the task at hand. The request has been submitted and the proposals of various companies have been considered. In May 1938, Curtiss and Vought were invited to build a prototype. The Curtis prototype was developed under the codename XSO3C-1, while the Vought product was codenamed XSO2U-1. XSO3C-1 was first launched on October 6, 1939.

Ultimately, the Curtiss product prevailed and was ordered for production after the US Navy ordered some minor design modifications, including a larger tail surface and upturned wingtips for improved stability. ). The modified Curtiss Type 82A became USN SO3C-1 and was produced under the earlier nickname "Seagull". The powerplant of choice became the Ranger V-770-6 series engine.

SO3C Journey

The SO3C was designed to match the seaplanes of the time. Much of their appearance looks fairly conventional, revolving around a cylindrical fuselage that connects to a local network of buoys under the plane's fuselage and wings.

Regarding the SO3C, the fuselage rests on a large centralized pontoon that is nearly the length of the aircraft, while the underside of each wing is supported by smaller stabilizing pontoons attached to struts. The radial engine is mounted on the front of the fuselage and drives a two-bladed propeller assembly.

The pilot sits behind the engine compartment under a glass canopy, usually left open for better viewing. The second crew member, the designated observer (sitting forward facing), was seated in a separate cockpit at the rear of the aircraft, his position at the bottom of the vertical stabilizer.

The wings are mounted in the middle with a straight leading edge and a tapered trailing edge with truncated ends (with a noticeable upward sweep at each end, this is to address some of the initial instability issues in the prototype design) and mounted directly on the rear of the pilot's position. The rear wing is dominated by a large vertical rear wing that is curved to give the SO3C a highly recognizable appearance. Horizontal stabilizers were added to the sides of the vertical tail mount.

Of note is the heavily framed canopy for the spectator - this arrangement is actually part of the front of the tailgate base. However, this poses problems for the SO3C's aerodynamics, as the observers mostly fly with the cockpit open.

While this disrupted airflow to the tail of the aircraft, it gave the observer a better view when tracking surface targets from above. Except for the cloth-covered control surfaces, the structure is metallic.

It is the engine that makes or destroys the plane

Power is provided by the much-maligned 600 hp Ranger XV-770-8 inverted V12 engine. The engine offers a top speed of 172 mph, but cruising speed is limited to around 123 mph. The range is approximately 1,150 miles (or approximately 8 hours of flight time) and the aircraft is limited to 15,800 feet of service.

The SO3C has an empty weight of 4,284 pounds and a maximum takeoff weight of 5,729 pounds.

The Ranger XV-770 is an engine developed by the Ranger Aircraft Engine Division of the Fairchild Engine & Aircraft Corporation. This design appeared in 1931 from the Ranger 6-440 series. The 6-440 is an inline air-cooled engine built by the company to power a range of trainer aircraft.

In the US military nomenclature, 6-440 takes the designation L-440. One of the first platforms to feature the V-770 was the Vought XSO2U-1 Scout. This engine was later paired with the Curtis SO3C Seamew. At Seamew, the engine proved to be defective and often proved to be very profitable. Overheating proved to be a major sticking point, especially at low speeds.

Despite its limitations, the V-770 has found a home on a number of other military platforms, including the Fairchild AT-21 trainer and the experimental Bell XP-77 fighter. However, neither platform was produced in quantity, with only 175 AT-21s produced and only two prototypes produced for the XP-77.

Weapons

As an observation platform, the SO3C was never intended to be used as a fighter jet. She retained a .30 caliber fixed forward-firing M1919 Browning machine gun (operated by the pilot) and a 0.50 caliber M2 Browning heavy machine gun (operated by the observer) in the rear cockpit. When deployed in an offensive role, the SO3C can use a pair of 100-pound utility bombs or a 325-pound depth charge, all on the outboard wings or on the center bomb rack (if available).

The central bomb rack can hold a 500-pound general-purpose bomb.

Seamews serving in the US

In July 1942, the U.S. Navy received the first production SO3C-1 Seagulls and deployed them on the USS Cleveland with V-770-6 series engines. A total of about 300 were shipped, but the performance of these systems never really met the expected USN performance standards.

As such, the type was later generally converted to a radio-controlled target drone named SO3C-1K. Therefore, when SO3C-2C production models are available, all SO3C-1s are removed from the USN as front-line equipment.

The SO3C-2 is based on the Curtiss Type 82B, and is considered a more "navy" form, with safety gear and bomb racks under the fuselage. 456 SO3C-2s were eventually produced, although 250 of these were sent to the UK as SO3C-1Bs (Curtiss Model 82C) under a Lend-Lease agreement.

However, these were eventually delivered as SO3C-2C models, with an upgraded powerplant and other minor improvements.

SO3C in UK Services

The Royal Navy Fleet Aviation - a branch of the Royal Navy - uses SO3C and names it Seamew (or Seamew Mk. I). The US Navy later adopted the "Seamew" name from the United Kingdom, replacing their original "Seagull" naming convention.

When the newer SO3C-2C versions came online with the Royal Navy, they were simply referred to as "Seamew 1". It should be noted that none of the British Seamews have ever been deployed to combat squadrons, relegated to general training units and specific airsoft/radio training groups.

The first Seamews were delivered to the Royal Navy in March 1943. The first squadron to use Seamew became the 755th Training Squadron at Worthy Down (FN459), Hampshire, England, in August 1943. The squadron operated until 1945. Two other training squadrons exist at 744th and 745th squadrons in Nova Scotia, Canada.

Also, no Seamew has seen combat action.

Originally, the FAA Seamews were intended as catapult reconnaissance aircraft for use on Royal Navy ships. However, the type was never really used for this capability and ended up only being used as a trainer or second-tier aircraft. In total, the UK received around 250 Seamew aircraft. Later deliveries were canceled by January 1944 as the availability of the American Water OS2U Kingfisher seaplane increased.

During the war, as many as 1,519 Kingfisher aircraft were produced and served as the mainstay of many U.S. Navy ships. The Seamew quickly disappeared from Royal Navy lore in early 1945 as the Kingfisher gained more ground.

"Queen of Seagulls"

"Queen Seamew" is the FAA designation for the SO3C-1K target UAV production variant of the SO3C family. Thirty such examples were ordered according to Lend-Lease, but the order fell through due to the cancellation of the supply of the system in the UK.

Curtis try again

As SO3C reception proved lukewarm at best, Curtiss attempted to revive their dead aircraft by introducing the SO3C-3 (Curtiss Model 82C). The SO3C-3 has a lighter operating weight and is equipped with a more powerful SGV-770-8 series engine.

Although promising, only 39 examples were completed before the US Navy and FAA withdrew their interest in the type. All existing orders were cancelled immediately and Seamew disappeared from history.

The Seamew performed so well that its crew nicknamed the plane "The Manatee."
