History

KVD002 is a Chinese medium-altitude long-endurance unmanned combat aerial vehicle developed for the People's Liberation Army Ground Force. It performs reconnaissance, surveillance, target designation, communications support, and precision-strike missions for land formations and can cooperate with helicopters and other forces.

China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation publicly unveiled KVD002 at the China Helicopter Exposition in Tianjin in September 2023. Reports indicate that the Ground Force began inducting the aircraft during the same year, although similar drones observed in earlier exercises may previously have been identified as CH-4s.

KVD002 is closely related to the export-oriented CASC CH-4 family but incorporates equipment and interfaces tailored to Chinese Ground Force requirements. The manufacturer and military have not published a complete comparison, so family-level specifications should not automatically be treated as official KVD002 data.

Development

The aircraft was created to give army formations an organic long-endurance aerial platform. It can remain over an operating area longer than a crewed helicopter, observe targets beyond ground line of sight, and deliver precision weapons when authorised.

Its missions include battlefield intelligence, reconnaissance, fire support, target designation for helicopters or artillery, communications relay, and patrol. Reports also state that it can operate from high-altitude airfields and use relatively short runways.

Operationalisation

In July 2026, Chinese state television showed a KVD002 conducting an armed reconnaissance mission against a moving unmanned surface vessel during a joint exercise off China's southeast coast. At least thirteen KVD002 aircraft were visible at an unidentified base in southern China, indicating formation-level fielding rather than a single prototype.

The target's rapid manoeuvres reportedly prevented reliable automatic lock. With several minutes remaining before the strike, an operator switched to manual control, stabilised the aircraft, and established the target lock. Video then showed a missile hitting the vessel from above, although the level of damage was not established.

Design

KVD002 uses the conventional layout of the CH-4 family: a long straight wing, central fuselage, rear-mounted piston engine with pusher propeller, V-tail, and retractable tricycle landing gear. This configuration favours endurance and payload capacity over high speed.

Sensors

An electro-optical and infrared sensor turret beneath the fuselage provides surveillance, target identification, tracking, and laser designation. A Chinese operator stated that its camera offers 20× zoom.

Additional payloads may include communications-relay or radar equipment, but the exact operational sensor suite has not been disclosed. Optical performance depends on range, weather, haze, target contrast, vibration, and line of sight.

Control and communications

The aircraft normally follows computer-managed flight plans under supervision from a ground station. Operators can intervene when automatic tracking cannot handle a manoeuvring or visually complex target, as shown during the 2026 maritime exercise.

Public sources do not identify the KVD002 data-link range, satellite-communications equipment, encryption, electronic protection, or autonomy level. Long-range operation requires a suitable line-of-sight relay or beyond-line-of-sight link.

Armament

KVD002 can carry precision-guided weapons on underwing hardpoints. Public displays have associated it with two AR-1 air-to-surface missiles, while the exact weapon used against the unmanned boat was not officially named.

CH-4-family integration suggests potential use of compatible small missiles and guided bombs, but KVD002's approved weapon list has not been published. Payload and endurance trade against each other because additional weapons increase mass and drag.

Operational history

The People's Liberation Army Ground Force inducted KVD002 from 2023 and used it in patrols and exercises. Its coastal live-fire demonstration in 2026 showed an ability to search for and strike a small moving maritime target, expanding the platform's demonstrated role beyond conventional land reconnaissance.

The exercise also exposed a limitation: automatic tracking did not initially maintain lock on the rapidly manoeuvring boat, and an operator completed the targeting process manually. This indicates a human-supervised weapon system rather than unrestricted autonomous target selection.
