History

The Cessna SkyCourier UX is an uncrewed cargo aircraft concept being developed by Textron Aviation and Merlin for military logistics. It combines the production Cessna SkyCourier twin-engine turboprop platform with Merlin autonomous-flight technology and is intended for cargo movement in contested and dispersed operating environments.

Textron Aviation and Merlin introduced the SkyCourier UX concept on 14 September 2026 at the Air, Space & Cyber Conference. The project remained in the concept phase at its introduction, with engineering studies and evaluations planned to examine autonomous and pilot-optional resupply operations.

The proposed aircraft is intended to fill a logistics role between small tactical cargo drones and large military transports. Its planned missions include intra-theater distribution, support of expeditionary bases, transport of repair parts and medical supplies, and operations to island or remote airfields.

Development

Merlin had already worked with Textron Aviation on autonomous-flight technology before the SkyCourier UX concept was announced. Its software had been tested on aircraft including the Cessna Grand Caravan, while Merlin was also working on crew-reduction technology for the MC-130J under a US Special Operations Command program.

For the SkyCourier UX program, Merlin founder Matt George said development would likely begin by modifying a standard SkyCourier for optionally piloted operations before progressing toward a fully autonomous aircraft. Textron Aviation and Merlin also described a longer-term configuration designed around autonomy and cargo from the outset rather than simply removing the pilots from the existing aircraft.

Textron Aviation stated that such a variant could be assembled on the existing SkyCourier production line in Wichita, Kansas. The use of an aircraft family already in production is intended to provide an established manufacturing base, support network and sustainment infrastructure. Design

The SkyCourier UX is based on the twin-engine turboprop Cessna SkyCourier but is being studied as an aircraft optimized for uncrewed cargo transport. Instead of retaining the conventional cockpit arrangement, the proposed configuration would use the forward fuselage for cargo access and additional usable volume.

Cargo configuration

Design concepts under evaluation include a forward-loading architecture that replaces the cockpit volume with additional cargo space and provides access through a large nose opening. FlightGlobal described the proposed nose section as upward-swinging. Textron and Merlin have also discussed aircraft kneeling capability and integrated loading systems intended to simplify cargo handling at austere locations.

Current design objectives call for a payload of approximately 2,720 kg (6,000 lb) and accommodation for up to three LD3 cargo containers. The concept is intended to retain the SkyCourier platform's ability to operate from unimproved runways.

Autonomy

The aircraft is planned to use Merlin Pilot autonomous-flight software rather than an onboard flight crew. The concept includes fully autonomous takeoff and landing. Merlin's approach uses software together with flight-control modifications and electro-mechanical actuation to command the control surfaces of aircraft that were not originally designed as fully fly-by-wire platforms.

The absence of an onboard crew is central to the proposed configuration. It would allow the forward fuselage to be redesigned for cargo while also permitting missions in locations where operators may consider crew exposure unacceptable. These capabilities remain development objectives rather than operationally demonstrated SkyCourier UX features.

Program status

As introduced in September 2026, the SkyCourier UX remained a concept rather than an operational aircraft. Textron Aviation and Merlin planned further engineering studies and evaluations, and no completed SkyCourier UX prototype, production order or service entry was identified in the available material.

The companies position the aircraft for contested logistics and intra-theater distribution rather than very short-range battlefield delivery. It is intended to operate between smaller resupply drones or rotorcraft and larger transports such as the C-130J and C-17, allowing heavier airlifters to be reserved for missions that require their greater capacity.
