History
The 1930s and 1940s were the heyday of the "heavy fighter", which bridged the gap between fighter jets and light bombers. These platforms typically use a twin-engine layout, have a crew of two (or more), and are responsible for various types of missions, including interception, reconnaissance, and bomber escort.
Fiat Cr. The 25 is another Italian product in the category, and when the country went to war with its German allies in September 1939, the collection only became a limited-edition product for the company.
After the disappointment came Bredaba. 88 Ground attack platform (the runabout that was affected when military equipment was installed on it), Regia Aeronautica (Italian Air Force) still needed a stable "twin" with sufficient firepower, which led the service to pursue the CR.
25 and about 40 were contracted for reconnaissance missions.
FIAT prototyped the design on July 22, 1937, and it turned out to be promising. Top speed can reach almost 285 miles per hour, and it has enough range of 925 miles. The plane can handle altitudes of nearly 26,000 feet. Power comes from 2 x FIAT A. 74 RC.
38 air-cooled radial piston engines, each producing 840 horsepower when driving a three-bladed propeller. Engines are usually mounted on the leading edge of each main wing aircraft.
In general, the aircraft was a modern product of its time. The body is sleek and well contoured for aerodynamic efficiency. The cockpit is layered, with a good view of the nose during flight and a clear view of the two engines in the event of a problem. The main aircraft is mounted forward amidships, and the tail is in a traditional single tail configuration with a low level. The landing gear rolls on the two main legs, and the tail wheel lifts the tail.
The original proposed weapon was 4 x 12.7mm Breda SAFAT machine guns (all mounted on fixed forward-firing gun mounts) and could carry a 660 lb bomb load for fighter-bombers. The all-metal construction relies on a lightweight alloy covered in fabric.
During Cr. The 25 can be operated by two base crews, adding a third crew to the bomber configuration to relieve some of the mission work from other operators.
The main reconnaissance type was simply referred to as "Cr. 25", and two prototypes were built to accommodate its development. If desired, the airframe could also be used as a bomber. "Cr. 25bis" is the most authoritative long-range reconnaissance platform of the series, capable of escorting fighters or bombers, and ten were produced as standard. Its armament is reduced to 2 x 12.7mm heavy machine guns.
The "Cr. 25D" is the 10th pre-production airframe modified for a VIP passenger role - handling services between Rome and Berlin for senior personnel. The "Cr. 25quater" became an abandoned version with a larger wing area and an improved weapons scheme.
First flight in 1940, as far as is known, there is nothing more from this brand.
Despite the command of 40 men, only 10 aircraft actually served in time for World War II operations. From July 1941, combatants were deployed under the banner of the 173rd Strategic Land Reconnaissance Squadron. In service, the fleet was primarily used to escort Italian convoys and held that role until January 1943, when the series was withdrawn from front-line service. The Chrome 25 thus became another Italian twin-engine design that didn't find the necessary internal support to become something bigger for the Italian war effort.
No more than a dozen aircraft were produced.
