History of the Airbus Helicopters H175
The EC175 model in development expands Airbus Helicopters' range of medium utility helicopters. Given the market's interest in modern mid-range spare parts, Airbus has enough interest to push for a new design to expand its market reach. EC175 became a product of this work, which started in 2005. In 2008, the product was officially unveiled at the Heli-Expo and received more than 100 orders.
A prototype helicopter was flown on December 17, 2009 to justify the design.
The EC175 is a traditional helicopter through and through. It incorporates a well-sloped arcuate cone with windows that provide an extended forward view from the two-seat cockpit. The pilots sat side by side in a traditional arrangement.
Passenger seats in the rear of the cockpit are spacious, and the mid-size helicopter has a sliding door on each side of the fuselage depending on the interior seating configuration used, the total number of accommodation can be up to 18. Pilots enter and exit the cockpit through traditional automotive-style revolving doors. The stern shaft is fitted with a drive shaft that drives the tail rotor on the port side.
The main rotors sit on top of the twin-engine assembly, which in turn sits on top of the cabin. The helicopter has a fully retractable all-wheel drive landing gear. The horizontal tail is located in the tail section, but behind the tailstock, at the bottom of the vertical tail.
This type of power is achieved by 2 Pratt & Whitney Canada PT6C-67E turboshaft engines, 1,776 shp each. This will provide a top speed of 195 mph, with a cruising speed of about 177 mph. Range is 782 miles and service is capped at 19,685 feet.
While the helicopter will be produced in France as the EC175, AVIC has received the model AC352 for domestic production in China. These will be powered by in-house WZ-16 series turboshaft engines.
