Focke-Wulf Fw 189 Uhu (Owl) History

The

Focke-Wulf-branded Fw 189 Uhu (translated as "Owl") was the most peculiar aircraft design of the Luftwaffe during World War II, but it did nothing to make it look less deadly. The system was responsible for successful operations against the Russians on the Eastern Front, where it was used for short-range tactical reconnaissance missions, but had limited use in night combat capabilities.

Overall, the 848 examples will result in multiple variants, each with specific changes and modifications to suit the desired character.

The Fw 189 was twin-engine, consisting of a wide-span wing element and two booms. The Fw 189 system consisted of a crew of three (including the pilot and two gunners), located high in the cockpit, between the engine cantilevers, in an almost entirely glasshouse design. The crew of three consisted of the pilot and two gunners - one with a double-barreled inverted machine gun mount and the other with a double-barreled machine gun mounted in a stern cone turret arrangement.

An additional ?441 of external business has been put into the system.

The real dedicated role of the Fw 189 was that of a reconnaissance aircraft, and the system was heavily used against the Soviet Union. Although the system's range was limited to 416 miles, no fewer than 30 Fw 189s were converted into night fighters against the Soviet light fighters that were often seen on the front lines.

Overall, the Fw 189 system has maintained a successful service record and played an important (albeit limited) role in the offensive on the Eastern Front.
