History of the Grumman F4F Wildcat

The Grumman F4F Wildcat was the unsung hero of the Allied Pacific theater campaign in the early days of World War II. Often overshadowed by the upcoming Grumman F6F Hellcats and Vought F4U Corsair hotrods, the burly Wildcat with biplane origins is just as reliant on the tenacity of its pilot as it does for the capabilities of this finely crafted machine.

The Wildcat is a highly recommended high-performance machine by 1936 standards. The F4F served with the Americans and the British (the latter known as Martlets) during key years of the war, with the British Wildcats serving until the end of the war in 1945.

Grumman competed with Brewster in the 1935 U.S. Navy competition to sell their next-generation carrier-based fighter to the U.S. Navy. Brewster showed off his impressive F2A Buffalo - a fast, no-frills, single-engine, single-seat monoplane - and Grumman set out to impress with his past G-16 biplane design, The design entered the competition as the XF4F-1. The Brewster F2A Buffalo shined, and the U.S.

Navy was less than impressed with Grumman's design, eventually winning the U.S. Navy contract for Brewster. Approximately 509 Brewster F2A fighter jets will be produced.

Despite the US Navy's decision, the G-16 was modified by Grumman into the G-18 design, an aircraft with a more traditional monoplane layout. The U.S. Navy compared the new design - designated XF4F-2 - enough to order an airworthy prototype. The aircraft, which first flew in September 1937, was powered by a 1,050-horsepower Pratt & Whitney R-1830-66 Twin Wasp radial piston engine.

Despite the redesign and more powerful engines, the aircraft still lived up to the many ideals the Brewster Buffalo was looking for in the U.S. Navy.

Grumman is again trying to keep the U.S. Navy alive by producing a G-36 model design and equipping it with larger square-tip wings, a redesigned empennage, and engines with the Pratt & Whitney XR-1830-76 series of interest with a two-stage compressor. The G-36 was completed in February 1939, with a prototype designated the XF4F-3, and its maiden flight the following month. This time, the Grumman team got performance and reliability right, and the U.S.

Navy entered production with the model as the F4F-3. The F4F-3 earned the right to be the first production model in the Wildcats series. The XF4F-3 also produced a few other design changes, but these were negligible.

The design of the F4F reflects the robust fuselage of its biplane. The Pratt & Whitney engine is enclosed in the cylindrical front of the fuselage and has exposed air-cooled radial ports. The engine uses a three-bladed propeller system with a single spinner. The canopy is divided into two parts, the front windshield is held in place and the second rear part is mounted on two rear rails. Both sections feature heavy "greenhouse" style frames.

The cockpit is directly integrated into the "razor"-style upper rear fuselage, which undoubtedly limits the pilot's field of vision to his "six". The wings are mounted slightly forward, centrally on either side of the cockpit.

The wings contain 2 x 12.7mm machine guns (two guns per wing) and weapons with 450 rounds of ammunition per gun. Landing gear was conventional at the time, and the aircraft had a "trailer" design with two main landing gears in the front and a tail wheel in the rear. The nose gear was borrowed from earlier Grumman interwar aircraft designs and had to be manually cranked by the pilot in the cockpit when lowering or raising the gear. The undercarriage design licensed the Grofronin design from Grumman, which Leroy Grumman worked on before starting his aerospace company. When fully stowed, the exposed wheel sides are in line with the sides of the fuselage, a unique hallmark of the F4F Wildcat range.

The rear wing is conventional, with a vertical rear wing and horizontal plane. All wing edges are "rounded" due to the practical look of the aircraft.

Although the pilot sits directly behind the engine mounts, he has good forward and side views. Former pilots -- especially FAA pilots -- report how "good" the cockpit feels, at least for them. Like most American cockpits, it's roomy for the average person and features a relatively clean-almost sparse dashboard containing simple dials and gauges adorned with sun visors on top.

A center console area protrudes toward the pilot from between his legs and houses the ADF automatic direction finder. A simple control stick is placed between the pilot's legs. The rudder is controlled by two floor-mounted rudder pedals, and the hand crank of the landing gear is located on the lower right.

All controls are within the pilot's reach or line of sight, making it relatively easy to monitor the aircraft. If the Wildcat pilot completely let his pilot down, those bugs would be fixed in the improved F6F Hellcat a few years later.

At this point, events in Europe put a lot of pressure on France. The German invasion of the country brought the country to the brink of collapse as its military defenders were extremely weak and punished on all fronts. The French looked for a more comprehensive external solution for quick fixes and found one in the Grumman G-36 design (F3F-3). The aircraft was ordered by France as an improved G-36A design with "French friendly" instrumentation, a redesigned front cowl with a Wright R-1820 Cyclone engine, non-folding wings and armament with 4 x 7.7mm Dahn machine guns and a throttle lever designed to be pulled back instead of the traditional push forward method.

Despite the order, France fell before the plane was delivered. So the British, already rare in their fleet of aircraft, took the Martlet Mk I job.

The G-36A/F3F-3/Martlet Mk I aircraft ordered by France were of course modified for British use with modifications provided by Blackburn. The Martlets' throttle levers were redesigned to be more traditional British propulsion, the weapons were revised to a 4 x 12.7mm Browning layout, and all gauges became "British friendly".

As external bomb storage, 2 x 100 lb bombs or 2 x 58 gallon drop tanks found their place. The Martlet Mk I was delivered to the Fleet Aviation (FAA) in July 1940 and entered service relatively quickly on September 8, 1940, with the 804th Squadron becoming its first recipient.

In December of that year, a Martlet Mk I is thought to have shot down its first enemy aircraft - a Junkers Ju 88 over Scapa Flow - becoming the first American-made aircraft to shoot down an enemy in World War II. /p]

At the request of the British, Grumman proposed the G-36B design - the F4F-3 with the original twin-Wasp engines under a redesigned hood. The British initially accepted these aircraft as the Martlet Mk II, but since the first ten had no folding wings, the next thirty were equipped with wings, and the aircraft received two other designations, the Martlet Mk III and the Martlet Mk III ( one).

It is important to note that this batch of 30 aircraft was originally intended to be delivered to the Hellenic Air Force in Greece to repel a German invasion of the country, but a similar incident with France forced the aircraft to fall into British hands instead of being delivered.

The F4F-3 entered service with the U.S. Navy in 1940 with the first 78 prototypes ordered and quickly established itself as the first carrier aircraft, ironically surpassing the U.S. Navy Brewster F2A buffalo. By then, the two-stage supercharger had become a hard-to-find commodity, although the need for this power increase was as important as the weaponry.

As a result, the improved F4F-3A model was equipped with a Pratt & Whitney R-1830-90 radial piston engine producing 1,200 horsepower, paired with a simpler two-speed single-stage supercharger. Compared to the base F4F-3, the aircraft was degraded in performance, and many U.S.

Navy pilots openly disliked flying with it. Still, the F4F-3A was used with the base F4F-3 model, and the British also used it under the name Martlet Mk III(B). A "one-off" F4F came in the form of a seaplane, the F4F-3. The seaplane was supplied by the Edo Aircraft Company and the landing gear was replaced.

First flown on February 28, 1943, this "wild catfish" proved far inferior to the already meager offerings of the base F4F fighter. The design was never further developed or produced.

In April 1941, a folding-wing version of the F4F was tested, and on October 1, 1941, the U.S. Navy officially adopted the "Wildcat" designation for the F4F series.

The Wildcat proved in many ways important to the Allied cause at seaboth in the Atlantic and in the Pacific. Most importantly, it provided the United States and Britain with a capable aircraft carrier, both of which were severely lacking in their inventories early in the war. The Wildcats eventually leveled the playing field in favor of the Allies. The British were already overwhelmed by the Royal Air Force's use of the Hawke Hurricane and the Super Sea Fire, so the arrival of their naval types - the Hawke Sea Hurricane and the Super Sea Fire respectively - had to be delayed for a while.

Likewise, the Americans, with the exception of their Brewster F2A Buffalos, had little opposition to the powerful scourge of the Mitsubishi A6M "Zero" in the Pacific. In any case, the arrival of the Wildcats was significant for the outcome of the early air battles.

In September 1942, HMS Audacity set sail with her fleet aviation detachment consisting of six martlets. In September of the same month, two Martlets are believed to have shot down a German Focke-Wulf Fw 200 Condor that was monitoring the convoy.

Not limited to maritime operations, the British commissioned Martlet to take to the skies of North Africa, leading to the destruction of an Italian Fiat G.50 bomber on September 28, 1941.

The Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941 started the American war machine. He had access to the burly, straight-winged Wildcat fighter, whose origins were biplaneshardly the stuff of legend.

At the time of the attack, only a handful of wildcats were in the Pearl Districtthese belonged to the U.S. Marine Corps VMF-211 squadron. Nine were damaged or destroyed in the attack on Oahu.

The following day, feral cats were killed during the Japanese attempted invasion of Wake Island Atoll on May 7/8. December is used for anger. About a dozen F4F-3s were stationed there - also part of the VMF-211 - and eight of the 12 fighters were damaged or destroyed on the ground. Four Wildcat fighters succeeded in sinking the Japanese destroyer Kikutsuki (the Wildcats were used as bombers) in the attack.

The Japanese destroyer Hayate was also sunk, although this was attributed to defensive coastal guns. Events forced the Japanese to call off the invasion and retreat, leaving Vic to fight for another day. The island's survival - at least for now - is due in part to the exploits of these U.S.

Marines and their Wildcats, which gave Japan its first major defeat of the war.

In 1942, the final Wildcat was introduced to the F4F-4. The F4F-4 model is equipped with 6 x 12.7mm Browning machine guns (upgraded from a 4-stack arrangement) and folding wings to improve carrier storage on space-saving Allied aircraft carriers. The armament change was an upgrade to the previous Wildcat form and was made at the request of the British.

However, these changes come at a price. The added machine gun forces the total ammo to be spread across six weapon systems instead of four, reducing the total "shooting" time from a total of 34 seconds to a measly 20 seconds, effectively reducing the total ammo for the Wildcat pilot.

This limitation basically forces Wildcat pilots to work harder to kill, as more gunfire doesn't necessarily equate to better accuracy. To make matters worse, the cannon also had an obnoxious and deadly tendency to jam, forcing many Wildcat pilots to become melee bystanders.

These internal changes also caused Wildcat to become heavier, reducing the performance of content to some extent. Additional weapons and folding wing pods allow the Wildcat to reach a top speed of 318 mph while providing a slower rate of climb.

Despite these shortcomings, the F4F-4 became the most produced aircraft, surpassing the F4F-3 on the assembly line (simultaneous production of both variants is uncommon). The British received their F4F-4 model as the Martlet Mk IV, complete with a Wright Cyclone engine and a modified hood. The armament was further enhanced (and expected to decrease performance) by providing 2 x 250 lb external bombs (or 2 x 58 gallon drop tanks as required) under the wings.

The F4F-4 first flew on April 14, 1941.
