History
The Dodge WC54 3/4 ton military ambulance was built by the Dodge Brothers division of the Chrysler Corporation between 1942 and 1945 (body completed by the Wayne Company). This ambulance is a replacement for the aging WC9 1/2 ton series that appeared decades ago, with two standard staff in the front compartment and four hospital beds in the rear. In lieu of four litters, six wounded can sit.
Gross payload is 1,800 pounds, while the WC54 weighs 5,920 pounds net and 7,720 pounds gross.
WC54 models feature all-wheel drive with eight-ply tires mounted on 16-inch wheels. The engine is a Dodge T214 inline 6-cylinder gasoline engine with 76 horsepower. The truck's top highway speed is quoted as 54 mph, and the high ground clearance helps it go off-road to some extent.
Mass production and use were achieved during World War II (1939-1945) and the Korean War (1950-1955). The WC54 3/4 ton ambulance was later replaced by the WC64 KD, which had flat tail panels and was designed to be easily removed - hence the "KD" name for "Knock Down".
The WC54 ambulance series is frequently featured in the American TV series MASH, whose plot covers the Korean War.
