History
Chinese industry has never shied away from copying (sometimes illegally) foreign products for local and regional sales. This seems to be the case with the AM General HUMVEE, the backbone of today's US military service 4x4 vehicles as it forms the frame of the Dongfeng EQ2050 series of trucks (some cosmetic changes were introduced to differentiate it from the US to differentiate its origins).
Medium A trial version (prototype) was launched in 2002 and the vehicle made its debut in 2003.
Note: Many Chinese manufacturers are copying Hummer products. The subject of this article is the form made by Dongfeng.
The shape and function of the EQ2050 are obviously based on the American HUMVEE. It retains the wide-body design and high ground clearance. The wheels are placed in the extreme corners of the truck for excellent balance, and the engine is up front as usual, encased by a large slotted hood.
The front of the vehicle has a radiator grille and large recessed headlights. The front windshield consists of two vertical panels with a supporting frame between them. Passengers have four automotive-style gullwing doors, two on each side of the body.
The rear of the truck can be configured as a bed (with or without a cover) or perform any other desired battlefield function.
Propulsion is a licensed Cummins (Dongfeng) EQB15-20 series turbo diesel engine. This is paired with a five-speed transmission system. The vehicle is suspended on all four wheels for excellent off-road driving, and all tires are connected to an adjustable inflation system.
A 6x6 wheel shape is also specified.
After an outstanding performance in the 1991 Gulf War, the original HUMVEE vehicle was shown to interested Chinese authorities, although it was ultimately not selected for large-scale procurement. Instead, local industry was used to produce copies (these were obtained through civilian market measures for the Chinese oil industry - the project in question was the Hummer H1 model). From 2004 to 2006, the Chinese military received a batch of nearly 60 trucks for active evaluation.
Shortly thereafter, the EQ2050 was selected for service as the EQ2058 "Lion" and was issued in limited quantities to special forces and SWAT units. Other notable names in the EQ2050 lineup include the EQ2025 6x6 model, the military-style CSK141 (which debuted in 2015), and the military-focused CSK002, dubbed the "Airborne Assault Vehicle."
Civil market models with gasoline powered engines, manufactured in China under the brand name DFM. Another civilian market model is the EQ2040H "Brave Soldier".
