Arjun (named after the Hindu mythological hero "Arjuna") represents the first indigenous Indian armor design. Indian Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) started designing and producing their own after obtaining local licence production of Vijayanta (mainly British Vickers Defence System Mk 1) and years of experience in armoured warfare in both India-Pakistan wars MBT to meet the Indian Army's ultimate need for replacement tanks. The resulting Arjun became a massive endeavor, carried out by local Indian companies with outside help from Germany, the Netherlands and Israel. Unfortunately, the system has been plagued by cost overruns and project delays, and - in some inner circles - is believed to have gone through a useful process.
As a result, this once promising tank system is considered by some to be obsolete.
Although development began as early as 1974, the first Arjun prototype did not appear in 1984, but was designed as a 40-ton main battle tank with the then industry-standard 105mm main gun. However, since the early needs of the Indian Army were identified, the Arjun has grown to a 58-ton displacement with a larger, more powerful 120mm gun.
With this joint partnership between Russia and India, Russia has lent its design arm to the announcement of a new Indian next-generation tank company in 2008. The system is expected to be completed in 2020, which could spell the end of Arjun.
Hopeful and optimistic about India's first domestically produced tank, the project finds itself in an unfortunate state. When first introduced, it rivaled the Western line of M1 Abrams and Leopard 2 tanksthese tanks themselves were 1970s designsbut at the current pace of Arjun development, the system is considered by most to be outdated.
Serve. If production were really limited to 124, its range would not be comparable to other more successful tanks of its kind by any means.

To date, about 125 Arjun series tanks have been produced, as well as Mk I series tanks. The Indian Army has ordered another 124 Mk II series tanks. The official entry of the armoured line was in 2004, with the 43rd Armoured Regiment, Indian Army Armoured Corps being the recipient. In spring 2010 tests, the Arjun performed well against the Russian T-90 MBT, which bodes well for the Indian product.
The vehicle has demonstrated its ability to hit moving targets, wade through deep water sources and traverse off-road.
The Mk II model was introduced in 2011 as an improved variant. This type of trial, which began in mid-2011, includes evaluating night vision systems, improving munitions and weapon routing, supporting explosive reactive armor (ERA) blocks, improving the navigation suite, and enhancing missile launch capabilities. Overall power has increased while overall weight has decreased slightly.
Testing continued until 2012, enabling the Indian Army to further evaluate the new model, culminating in additional contracts for the purchase of new vehicles. Visually, the Mk II model is a significant, more refined upgrade to the original Arjun range, promising a better return on investment than the original.
The Indian Army is expected to purchase at least 300 Arjun Mk II tanks.
