DRDO ATAGS (Advanced Towed Artillery Gun System)

History

The Advanced Towed Artillery System (ATAGS) is a 155mm/52 caliber towed howitzer developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) for the Indian Army and manufactured by Bharat Forge and Tata Power SED.

The Advanced Towed Artillery System (ATAGS) project was launched by DRDO in 2013 to replace the Indian Army's older guns with modern 155mm guns. To this end, DRDO's Defence Research and Development Laboratory (ARDE) has partnered with private players Bharat Forge Limited, Mahindra Defense Naval System, Tata Power Strategic Engineering and Public Entity Ordnance Factory Board (OFB).

It is part of DRDO's Development and Production Partner Program (DCPP).

The development of the gun took about 4 years and should be completed by March 2017. The delay in the completion of the project was attributed to the realization of the ammunition and recoil system and delivery issues in the manufacture of the subsystems.

The weapon is expected to begin user trials in 2017, with production scheduled to begin in 2019.

It was first publicly displayed at the 68th Republic Day Parade on January 26, 2017.
