History

The GAZ-2975 "Tigr" ("Tiger") of Russian origin is the Russian military equivalent to the U.S. military's ubiquitous HUMVEE multipurpose wheeled 4x4 vehicle. The design phase of this model began in 2001 by the Military Industries Corporation (MIC), production began in 2004, and it entered service in 2006.

The vehicle shares some strong physical similarities with the U.S. offering and shares the same multi-purpose, multi-purpose, all-terrain battlefield capabilities as its competing design.

Tigr was first introduced to the public during IDEX 2001.

The car is a 16,000-pound machine with an overall length of 19 feet, a width of 7.9 feet, and a height of 7.9 feet to the top of the fuselage. The front windshield is split in two, and the side of the vehicle features a thick rectangular viewing port. The hull topline is flat and can be fitted with optional gun bays like a Humvee. Passengers enter and exit through hinged car-style doors. The vehicle is suspended on a torsion bar suspension system for off-road driving and comfort, and its four large wheels are placed at the extreme corners of the chassis for strong balance.

Armor protection ranges from 5mm to 7mm, depending on configuration.

The Tigr is powered by a 6-cylinder diesel powered offering from Cummins USA and a YaMZ-534 4-cylinder model. Power ranges from 180 to 215 hp, depending on installation. The engine is mated to a GAZ JSC 5-speed manual transmission and can also be mated to the Allison LCT-1000 automatic series or the GM 545RFE series.

Operating range on internal fuel is up to 620 miles, and top road speeds are 87 mph (on-road) and 50 mph (off-road). The driver sits in the front left of the passenger compartment, and the passenger seat is on the right side above the center console with transmission controls.

Armament is variable, usually based on mission needs. A typical loadout consists of a 7.62mm PKP general purpose machine gun or an AGS-17 30mm automatic grenade launcher - similar to the American Humvee.

The Tigr is a standard high-mobility vehicle of the Russian Armed Forces. Series production started in full in 2007. The civilian market version appeared as the Tigr-2. Internally secure use of SPM-1.

Other variants include the unarmored GAZ-2330 brand and the five-door GAZ-23304. GAZ-233011 and GAZ-233012 are four-door and two-door flatbed trucks, respectively. GAZ-233013 is an unarmored three-door.

The Tigr-M is a new updated version with additional armor protection, diesel engine and more passenger seats. The Kornet-D/EM is a Tigr with a Kornet-EM anti-tank missile launcher mounted on the roof. The Tigr-6A SPV is a proposed battlefield officer transport aircraft.

To date, the Tigr line has been adopted by the military and police forces of Armenia, China (partially produced locally), Congo, Guinea, Mongolia, Nicaragua and Uruguay.
