History of Nexter Griffon VBMR (Vehicule Blinde Multi-Roles)
A consortium of Nexter, Thales and Renault Trucks supplies the modern French army with Jaguar EBRC wheeled armoured vehicles. The vehicle shares up to 70% parts commonality with another upcoming French Army Griffon VBMR ("Vehicule Blinde Multi-Roles"). As its name suggests, the Griffin will be a multi-mission, lightly armored 6x6 wheeled vehicle designed to fill various roles in Army service.
Scheduled to launch in 2018, it was also chosen by the Belgian Army to replace their own collection of aging Cold War-era wheeled combat vehicles, which are currently in service.
Griffon had a crew of two, including the driver and a full-time gunner. The passenger area can accommodate up to 8 people and is protected from bottom mines and improvised explosive devices as well as small arms fire and artillery spray.
The car weighs around 25,000 kg and is powered by a 400 hp diesel engine. The speed reaches 110 km/h and the cruising range is 800 km. Drive is transmitted to all three axles in a 6x6 wheel arrangement.
With its large wheels, good power delivery and high ground clearance, the Griffon is designed for great off-road performance.
Its layout is conventional, with the engine in the front compartment. Sleek headlights are embedded in the sleek nose design, while the engine area features a grille with horizontal slats.
Hinged car-style doors provide access to the cab for two operators, and larger doors on the side and stern of the fuselage allow passengers to get on and off. Thick bulletproof scopes are used throughout the design.
The roof hatch provides situational awareness for the crew/passengers as well as another entry/exit point.
The weapon will be modest, usually a 7.62mm or 12.7mm machine gun located on the hull roofline near the front of the truck. If necessary, a 40mm automatic grenade launcher (AGL) can be used instead. Whatever the weapons are suitable for, they will be installed in the Remote Weapon System (RWS) to allow firing without harming the crew.
An additional 7.62mm trunnion-mounted machine gun can be placed in the rear position above the fuselage. Smoke grenade launchers are used to check the vehicle itself during combat - six are installed on the RWS.
Other variants in the Griffon lineup (in addition to the armored personnel carrier form) include a dedicated command post vehicle (CP), a battlefield ambulance for medical evacuation, and an artillery observation platform.
