History
Nexter's Jaguar EBRC ("Engin Blinde de Reconnaissance et de Combat") was chosen as the immediate successor to the aging AMX 10RC, ERC 90 "Sagaie" and VAB "HOT" wheeled armoured vehicles. Jaguar, which uses a multi-purpose wheeled design, will be supplied in large quantities to the French Army from 2020, with deliveries expected to end in 2025.
In total, the French had to take about 248 Jaguar cars. The design is a joint effort of Nexter, Renault Trucks and Thales.
Jaguar shares around 70% of its parts with the VBMR Griffon wheeled utility vehicle, also used by the French Army.
Structurally, the Jaguar has very high ground clearance and a sloping bottom of the fuselage. This helps with off-road travel as well as blast deflection. The hull has corner panels for some basic ballistic protection, and the glacis panels are almost horizontal (armor protection up to STANAG 4). The driver sits in the center of the front fender with a thick ballistic view block.
The turret has faceted panels and the main gun protrudes from the front. Roof hatches provide situational awareness and entry and exit for turret personnel. The turret crew consists of the vehicle commander (left) and the dedicated gunner (right).
Day/night vision and ABC (nuclear, biological, chemical) systems will be standard equipment.
The combat weight of the vehicle is in the range of 25,000 kg.
The Jaguar is armed with a turret-mounted 40mm CTA International automatic cannon and a 7.62mm coaxial machine gun. The weapons kit will also provide standardized support for French Anti-Tank Missiles (ATGMs) to counter armored threats at long distances. The complete kit includes a stabilizer for shooting while driving and a panoramic sight for excellent situational awareness.
An all-digital system will form the armament control scheme, which will also allow for the programming of "smart" projectiles. There is also a Remote Weapon Station (RWS) on the roof, equipped with an additional 7.62mm machine gun that can be fired from inside the Jaguar's protective casing.
Self-defense systems include IR/RF jammers and laser warning devices, as well as electronically operated smoke grenade launchers. The shells were mounted in two rows of four along the sides of the front turret. Additional grenades are attached to the rear hull panel.
Power comes from an unnamed diesel unit driving all three axles. The first pair of wheels is steerable. The cruising range of the vehicle is about 800 kilometers.
Jaguar is an early candidate for the new MBDA MMP Anti-Tank Missile (ATGM) weapon. This 5th generation anti-tank/anti-personnel solution was introduced to the French Army and Navy in 2018. MMP follows Milan's Cold War-era ATGM solution.
