The History of General Dynamics Stryker

The M1126 Stryker is another 8x8 wheeled armoured vehicle in the Stryker vehicle family. The M1126's primary combat role is to be an armed armored personnel carrier, capable of transporting infantry and supplies to the front lines, while providing a respectable level of firepower during disembarkation.

The M1126's weapons can be tailored specifically to the operator's role and specific mission. The Stryker has essentially the same basic chassis as the "third generation" wheeled vehicles of the LAV series.

The

Stryker design features its eight large wheels, four mounted on one side. A dynamically adjustable suspension system allows 8x8 wheeled operation (4x4 full time, 8x8 more selectively), allowing the Stryker to operate efficiently on paved and unpaved roads as needed. Armor surfaces are sharply angled at the front to protect the crew and vital internal systems, while plate armor is oncoming. The Stryker has a wide front rake in line with the Stryker series of 8-wheeled vehicles.

Seats are provided for two main operators (driver and gunner) and a roll of 9 combat-ready infantrymen with their appropriate equipment. The infantry leaves the vehicle via a large ramp at the rear of the hull. Multiple hatches in the fuselage allow the crew to gain a standing position within the Stryker's body, despite the risk of exposure to enemy fire. Hatch locations are for the squad leader and VC, as well as two rear outposts, as well as a power entry hatch on the left side of the fuselage, aft of the driver's seat, and an additional passenger emergency exit hatch. The driver has a special hatch with sight blocks in the front left of the vehicle.

The surface of the Stryker's upper hull is suitable for carrying a variety of battlefield odds and ends.

The digital system on the Stryker allows the use of a fully interactive battlefield map to mark key targets and their respective locations. Other battlefield vehicles and commanders can use this information for more coherent planning between units.

The Stryker IVC is powered by a 350 hp diesel engine. The power-to-weight ratio is 15.8 kW/t. The listed top speed is 62 mph, although 70 mph is actually possible. The Stryker system has a claimed range of 300 miles.

Thanks to a universal soft mounting bracket in the center of the fuselage, the Stryker's armament is varied and mission-specific. The stand accommodates a remote weapon station, which itself can accommodate a variety of weapons depending on the operator's needs. The RWS is a product of the Norwegian company Kongsberg Defense & Aerospace, represented on the Stryker by the US Army designation PROTECTOR M151. This bracket can accommodate an M2 large-caliber air-cooled machine gun or a MK 19 series 40mm automatic grenade launcher.

The turret system can also be equipped to fire up to 16 M6 smoke grenades. The M151 is a fully remote-controlled fire system, meaning its crew can engage enemy targets without exposing their torsos through hatches to fire weapons.

All shots are handled from the relative safety of the Stryker itself.

The chassis of the Stryker constitutes a variety of mission-specific armored all-terrain vehicles. These include the M1126 Infantry Carrier, M1127 Reconnaissance Vehicle, M1128 Motorized Artillery System, M1129 Mortar Carrier, M1130 Command Vehicle, M1131 Fire Support Vehicle, M1132 Engineering Support Vehicle, M1133 Medical Evacuation Vehicle, M1134 Anti-Armored Missile Vehicle, M1135 NBC reconnaissance vehicle and prototype 105mm self-propelled howitzer system (development since discontinuation).

"Stryker" is the U.S. Army designation for the LAV series, the name itself derived from the last names of two independent U.S.

Army Medal of Honor recipients covering World War II and the Vietnam War. "Stryker" comes from ". The US Marine Corps uses the LAV series as the LAV-25, although it is a "second generation" system.

The Iraqi National Police will be the first export customer to receive approximately 400 M1126 Strykers.
