History of the General Dynamics Stryker MSL (Mobile Short-Range Air Defense Launcher)
The Stryker MSL (Mobile Short-Range Air Defense Launcher) is a proposed mobile short-range airspace denial weapons platform jointly developed by General Dynamics Land Systems and Boeing. Unveiled at the Space and Missile Defense Symposium in Huntsville, Alabama in August 2017, the system represents a slightly modified Stryker 8x8 wheeled airframe with a Boeing "Avenger" mounted on the rear Turret system.
The AIM-9X Sidewinder Air-to-Air Missile (AAM) or AGM-114 Hellfire Anti-Tank Missile (ATM) can search, track and attack the turret and can fly 360 degrees. The vehicle also carries an M230 Bushmaster 30mm chain gun.
In addition to being basically used to defend areas or convoys of aircraft (fixed- and rotary-wing), the system is also touted as defending against enemy Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) and incoming cruise missiles.
As the Stryker vehicle portion of the system remains largely mechanically unchanged, the Stryker MSL retains all the versatility of the original - enabling it to keep up with mechanized ground forces. A crew of three sat within range of the vehicle, capable of withstanding small-caliber fire and artillery jets.
There is an integrated self-targeting capability and an electronic warfare (EW) suite for self-sustainment.
The Stryker MSL is integrated with current U.S. Army systems and has been successfully tested with various machine guns, directed energy systems, and 2.75-inch rockets.
Due to its Stryker origin, the vehicle is fully airborne in the belly of a C-17 production tractor (or similar).
