In Cold War Europe, a protracted and bloody ground war was almost certain, and the Swedish army was not content to simply stand outside its neighbors, while the Soviet Empire watched on. As a result, the Swedish Army issued a request for a new mobile tank destroyer and awarded it to Hagglund & Soner. The vehicle used some auto parts from the existing (and capable) Pbv 302 Armoured Personnel Carrier (APC) series in 1961, designed to Swedish Army specifications and delivered as a pilot vehicle in 1969. After the required tests, the vehicle was officially accepted as the "Infanterikanonvagn 91" (Ikv 91) in the Army's stockpile and remained there until the turn of the century, when both the Ikv 91 and the Pbv 302 were eventually replaced by the state.
The state-of-the-art CV90 track was replaced by the vehicle family.
Despite its size, the Ikv 91 was piloted by a crew of four, including the driver, commander, gunner and loader. The driver managed a position on the left front hull, the rest of the crew in the turret and the fighting compartment in the center of the vehicle. The engine was housed in a compartment in the stern. Overall dimensions include a barrel length of 8.85m with the barrel forward, a width of 3m and a turret topline height of 2.32m. Armor protection allows small arms fire and direct hits of projectiles up to 20mm.
Due to the cramped nature of the turret design, a hatch was added to eject spent cartridges. The Ikv 91 also had amphibious features built in, allowing it to traverse over water (powered by its own tracks, although some production models were equipped with propellers).
Even in water, the vehicle retains all combat characteristics and fires the main gun.
The Ikv 91 is equipped with a landing gear consisting of six wheels surrounded by a wide track link, suitable for the more arctic conditions encountered in parts of Sweden. The drive sprocket is at the rear and the chain idler is at the front.
The vehicle is powered by a Volvo Penta TD120A 6-cylinder turbo diesel engine that produces 330 hp at 2,200 rpm. This gives the Ikv 91 a top speed of 65 km/h and a range of 500 km on the road (both values ??drop off-road). p]
The Ikv 91 is armed with a 90mm Bofors L/54 KV90S73 series towed main gun. The main guns are free to fire a variety of HE (High Explosive), HEAT (High Explosive, Anti-Tank) and AP (Armor Piercing) projectiles, enabling aircrews to deal with virtually every threat battlefield on the current battlefield. The gun provided good penetration values ??before the widespread adoption of the 120mm gun in the Soviet Union. A digital fire control system is used to provide significantly improved starter, first kill and mobile fire capabilities. A well-trained and experienced rifle crew can fire eight rounds per minute.
Night vision for the crew is standard, allowing the vehicle to operate in all light conditions and smog. Secondary armament consisted of 2 x m/39 light machine guns, one coaxially mounted next to the main gun and the other mounted on top of the turret in the commander's dome to counter threats from low-flying aircraft. Coaxial mounts are used to target the main gun and are also useful when dealing with the threat of enemy infantry trying to capture the tank. It was only later that formal laser rangefinders were introduced, largely eliminating the use of 7.62mm coaxial guns for range finding.
A pair of 71mm Lyra grenade launchers are also part of the armor package. Double rows of six smoke grenades were mounted on either side of the turret.
The production time of the Ikv 91 spanned from 1975 to 1978, during which 212 were delivered to the Swedish army (none were sold to export customers despite interest in the design). A 105mm armed variant and a dedicated anti-tank missile carrier were proposed, but both projects failed.
