History of KAMAZ BPM-97 (Boyevaya Pogranichnaya Mashina)

The Russian military has undoubtedly made great strides in modernization over the past decade. Various wheeled armored vehicles have been introduced or are being evaluated for their army. An example of the former is the BPM-97 (Boyevaya Pogranichnaya Mashina = "BattleVehicle Border Guard"), a 4x4 wheeled armoured personnel carrier based on modern armoured vehicle concepts and technologies. The design is credited to Andrei Nikolaev and the manufacturing is by Kamskiy Avtomobilny Zavod (KAMAZ). In production since 1999, about 150 copies have been delivered to the Russian border guards.

KAMAZ-43269 "Dozor" is a military model, while KAMAZ-43269 "Vystrel" ("Shot") is offered as a newer improved version.

So far (2017), users include Russia, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, and Syria.

In its design, the 10.5 ton BPM-97 features a traditional automotive-style layout with a front windshield, 4x4 street wheel arrangement and front engine. Larger wheels with rubber tires provide excellent ground clearance (400mm), ground displacement and off-road capability. Power comes from an in-house KAMAZ 740. A 10-20 V8 diesel engine produces 240 horsepower, and the chassis relies on a leaf spring suspension system.

The speed can reach 90 km/h and the cruising range can reach 1100 km. The vehicle dimensions include a length of 5.3 meters, a width of 1.9 meters, and a height of 2.3 (roof line). Inside there is room for two operators and up to eight passengers. Access is via traditional side gullwing doors as well as rear access points. There are also hatches installed along the roof.

The crew compartment is fully enclosed and protected (made of aluminium alloy) while resisting weapons up to 25mm shells.

Weapons are variable, as vehicles can accommodate different turrets. Therefore, 7.62mm, 12.7mm and 14.5mm machine guns can be mounted. Auxiliary devices usually include a 30mm automatic grenade launcher for maximum suppression of enemy forces from a distance.

This is in addition to any personal weapons (in the form of standard small arms) carried by the crew.

The BPM-97 is a significant upgrade for the Russian Border Patrol, which has outgrown the aging GAZ-66 truck. Some of the vehicles are also in service with various Russian special forces. During the Donbas war against Ukraine and the protracted Syrian civil war, the line was also confirmed for service, with the help of the Russian military. The BPM-97 series vehicles Expanded with the arrival of special mission types, with more advanced role players such as mine clearance and enhanced troop transport versions.

The 6x6 wheeled armoured vehicle with an extended hull was called the SBA-60K2 "Bulat". KAMAZ products were launched in 2013 and are manufactured by Zaschita in Russia.
