History of KAMAZ SBA-60K2 Bulat

As the battlefield became more mobile, the Russian Army modernized and equipped various wheeled vehicles, including the 4x4 wheeled "BPM-97" (detailed elsewhere on this page) and its extended 6x6 wheel Formula counterparts SBA-60K2 "Bulat" - both manufactured by KAMAZ in Russia. The SBA-60K2 is reminiscent of the Soviet Cold War era, when the BTR-152 with its long 6x6 wheelbase entered Soviet inventory from the 1950s.

About 15,000 examples of this design were completed by the end of the production run.

The SBA-60K2 "Bulat" is a state-of-the-art product based on an armored personnel carrier (APC). Depending on the combat load and armament, the vehicle weighs between 16 and 19.5 tons and has a barrel length of 8 meters, a width of 2.5 meters and a height of 2.6 meters.

There is a crew of two inside and can accommodate eight combat-ready troops. When armed, the vehicle carries a 7.62mm or 12.7mm machine gun in a Remote Weapon Station (RWS) above the top of the fuselage. The engine is mounted in the bow, and the driver is forward left.

The chassis is based on the KAMAZ-5360 6x6 wheeled military truck with a new angled armored hull superstructure. The hull features entry and exit points on the sides and stern, while providing firing ports for passengers. The roofline includes six sunroofs. Air conditioning is standard.

Propulsion from KamAZ-740. A 31-240 turbo diesel engine with 240 hp is combined with a 6x6 wheel arrangement. The engine is connected to a 10-speed manual transmission. The road speed is up to 90 km/h and the cruising range is up to 800 km.

The SBA-60K2, while lightly armored, has several survivability features: bulletproof windows, central tire inflation/adjustment system, fire suppression system, optional 360-degree camera and powered winch. The angled armor panels also provide basic ballistic protection, while the hull armor is V-shaped to resist explosions under the vehicle, improving the survivability of the occupants and passengers to some extent.

In addition, passengers can also get lightning protection seats.

Design development started in 2010, serial production started in 2013, and the production line has an important place in the modern Russian army. Zaschita assisted in production. At least 65 vehicles in use (2020).
