History
Before the advent of surface-to-air anti-aircraft missiles, countries relied on simple artillery to protect their airspace. All the major players in World War II understood the value of these dense defense network systems, and the Soviets were no exception. At the end of the war, continued development of more powerful and more powerful anti-aircraft artillery systems to counter Western armies. These efforts culminated in the 100mm caliber "KS-19" series in the late 1940s.
The 100mm system was designed to replace the antiquated 85mm system in use at the time. The design of the KS-19 is credited to L.V. Lulyev, and these guns played an important role in both the Korean War and the Vietnam War, and of course, on the Communist side.
About 5,000 KS-19 guns were produced, some of which are still used by the front-line countries to this day.
In terms of design, the KS-19's approach is very traditional and clearly shows its WWII influence based on German and Soviet experience. The system consists of several major components that make up the entire weapon, including the barrel, gun mount, platform, and transporter. The 100mm barrel has an extraordinary length, is precisely rifled, and has a multi-baffle muzzle brake on top to direct gas away from the gun and crew. The barrel is mounted in a heavy-duty bracket that contains the recoil mechanism, elevation/roll control and the operator's firing platform.
The cart is driven by a single rubber tire mounted along a steel rim at each corner of the assembly, with a collapsible vehicle tow ring mounted at one end. Recoil-absorbing "legs" extend from the sides of the carriage and lower for a more secure firing position.
Elevation is limited to +85/-3 degrees, 360 degree traverse, which is achieved manually using various handwheels. The crew will sit behind a small area of ??armored shields for basic protection, although there is no overhead, side or rear protection from the elements or battlefield hazards.
The car was traditionally towed by heavy Soviet military tractors, as it weighed 21,000 pounds and was 31 feet long, with the barrel attached to one end of the carriage assembly for transport. The KS-19's launcher consists of a semi-automatic, horizontally sliding wedge breech system with a power rammer and an automatic fuze mounter. All are connected to a PUAZO-6/19 steering system and a SON-9 series fire control radar array.
The KS-19 crew consists of no less than 15 personnel, including various artillery specialists, lateral/lift personnel, ammunition operators, and installation and disassembly personnel.
As an anti-aircraft weapon, the KS-19 is available as a standardized high-explosive (HE), high-explosive fragmentation (HE-FRAG) and general-purpose fragmentation (FRAG) all-in-one off-the-shelf projectile. They serve weapon systems well in timed area detonation operations, where the sky can be littered with explosive devices as enemy aircraft attempt to traverse the target airspace.
Also, like the Germans in previous wars, the Soviets found the inherent firepower and penetration values ??of the KS-19 suitable for the anti-tank role, and developed the Armor Penetrating Tracer (AP-T) and Armor Penetrating Tracer (APC) ) is equally suitable. -T) Projectiles for that specific character. The KS-19 was also released to fire other like-minded 100mm projectiles from Soviet stocks when needed, further expanding its tactical, logistical and battlefield use. Well-trained and experienced aircrews can fire up to 15 rounds per minute, provided a good barrage can be fired into the sky - especially when connected to a network of such artillery systems defending specific target areas.
Proximity fuzes have a range of up to 49,200 feet to aircraft, while timed fuzes have a range of about 41,600 feet. When used in an anti-tank role, the weapon now fires horizontally rather than vertically, and has a range of up to 13 miles.
"KS-19M2" is a well-known variant of the KS-19 family. When serving in the Chinese army, the weapon was named "Type 55".
