History
Daimler Trucks (North America) developed the M915A5 Line Haul Track Truck to meet the US Army's heavy duty truck requirements. It is a 6x4 wheeled system designed to transport heavy container systems from terminals to inland operations. The M915A5 is an "armored" version of the original M915A3, a new form derived from escort experience in the Afghanistan and Iraq theaters.
Evaluation of the M1915A5 pilot vehicle took place in September 2009 and continued until early 2010. In October 2009, Daimler placed its first order for 1,780 trucks, with deliveries starting the following September. Approximately 290,000 trucks are expected to eventually be procured for use by the U.S.
Army, Army Reserve and National Guard.
The overall configuration of this truck is conventional, with front engine, center cab and open rear chassis section. The fuel tank is located under and behind the cab, and there is a spare tire under the vehicle. The engine bay features a louvered grille design and an upward-sloping hood.
The windshield and side windows are thick to protect the occupant from small arms fire and artillery jets, but little else. A system from Meritor-Wabco tries to prevent rollover accidents. The truck has a front axle with two wheels and a rear dual axle extension axle with a total of eight wheels.
The turning radius is 51.6 feet.
The M915A5 is powered by a 500 hp Detroit Diesel S60 series diesel engine. The system is linked to an Allison 4500SP 6-speed automatic transmission. The six-wheel design features front (flat blade) and rear (Freightliner TurfTrac suspension) suspension for basic ride comfort.
The cab is equipped with a heating/air conditioning/ventilation system to provide a comfortable environment in almost all applications. The steering column has a tilt/telescopic function to accommodate some driver adaptations. Eaton VORAD VS400 is used as a collision warning system.
Front LED headlights, LED taillights and daytime running lights (DRL) aid driving in low light conditions.
The M915A5's 120-gallon internal fuel tank has a range of up to 600 miles at 40 mph. The speed limit on paved roads is 65 miles per hour. Ground clearance (9.5 inches) allows some obstacles to be traversed, as the vehicle can reach 20 inches deep.
