The M1068 SIPS (Standard Integrated Command Post System) became another evolution of the M577 Tactical Operations Center (TOC) vehicle, which in turn evolved from the M113 APC. The M577 has many changes to the base model M113 for the command post role, such as a raised fuselage roof (25.25 inches), extended communications suite, two 60-gallon fuel tanks, a 28-volt portable generator, an integrated cabin heater, folding table and 10m antenna mast.

Supports an optional attachable tent system that can be mounted on the rear of the vehicle for an expanded headquarters area. The car does not have the commander's seat and its cupola.

The M577 entered production even before the Army received its first pilot vehicle. From December 1962 to May 1963, FMC produced 270 M577 cars. Another 674 cars were discontinued between November 1963 and 1964. The original gasoline-powered production model was designated the M577.

The switch to a diesel engine resulted in the designation M577A1 in the 1960s. The M577A2 is nothing but an M577 vehicle built on the chassis of the new APC M113A2. The older M577 cars were subsequently upgraded to the new A2 standard.

The M577A3 is equipped with a RISE power pack with a more powerful engine unit and a larger diesel generator set.

Over time, a new program brings two-thirds of the existing M577A2 fleet to the "M1068" standard as the Standard Integrated Command Post System (SIPS) with the Army's Tactical Command and Control System (ATCCS) . This model includes a 5kW diesel generator and a brand new illuminated tactical tent design. The inclusion of the RISE power pack in the M1068 model resulted in the designation M1068A3.

Since these vehicles are based on the M113, they have a similar chassis and general appearance, as well as similar performance specifications. The crew usually consists of four people. A large rectangular power door (inserted into a smaller hinged door) serves the rear of the vehicle.

Auxiliary generators are installed in the forward end of the fuselage.
