History

North Korean military equipment is deeply rooted in Soviet Cold War (1947-1991) designs. This is evident in the M1992 (Type 1992) Armoured Personnel Carrier (APC), a locally developed version of the Soviet-era BRDM-2. The original BRDM-2 was a four-wheeled amphibious reconnaissance tank, introduced in 1962, with 7,200 produced for operators worldwide.

This type is still in use today (2017).

The North Korean Army version is believed to have emerged from development work carried out in the late 1980s. From the basic frame of the BR??DM-2, the M1992 was born, and its name comes from the first Western sighting in the North Korean army lineup in 1992.

The weapon is believed to be a combination device with the AT-4. Spigot" Anti-Tank Missile (ATGM) launcher with a 30mm AGS-17 Series Automatic Grenade Launcher (AGL) - this is heavier than the traditional machine gun weapons of Soviet vehicles.

All inherent features of the original BRDM-2 vehicle are believed to have been retained in the M1992 design, including its amphibious capabilities and gasoline-powered engine. On-/off-road capability is assumed to be similar to raw capability.
