History

M2009 as an armored personnel carrier (APC) for the modern North Korean army. It is considered to be an offshoot of the PT-85 light tank, a tracked amphibious vehicle inspired by Soviet design doctrine, hybridized with the turret of the BTR-80 family of 8x8 wheeled armoured vehicles. Known by the North Korean military as the M2010, the BTR-80 is nothing more than a local replica of a Soviet-era design.

The turret carries a 30mm automatic cannon and a 14.5mm heavy machine gun and a 7.62mm medium machine gun as auxiliary anti-infantry options.

Judging from the capabilities of the PT-85 light tank, the M2009 has both amphibious qualities and good off-road mobility. The PT-85 itself is based on the Soviet PT-76 amphibious light tank.

The PT-85 is seen as the successor to the stock PT-76 developed locally in North Korea - although it is actually inspired by the PT-76.

The North Korean army is believed to have about 3,200 M2009 vehicles in its inventory.
