NORINCO PGZ-07

History

NORINCO PGZ-07 (SPAAA) self-propelled anti-aircraft guns are in service with the modern Chinese army. It provides short- and medium-range air deterrence (via artillery and missile fire) to ground forces and key locations such as airfields and bridges.

In addition to its value as an anti-aircraft solution, the lethality of an automatic cannon extends to ground targets.

The system uses radar and rangefinders to accurately determine the search, tracking, targeting, and engagement of incoming air threats, including fixed-wing aircraft and helicopters. The armament section of the vehicle is a 2 x 35mm automatic cannon assembly, with each gun mounted on either side of a fully rotating/elevating turret mounted above the hull.

Add to this 4x Short Range Missile Launcher for a more modern approach to airspace denial. Eight smoke grenade launchers are mounted on both sides of the lower part of the turret for self-shielding.

These guns can fire various types of active Chinese ammunition, including general purpose high-explosive incendiary (HEI) as well as armor-piercing and tracer rounds. The tower accommodates a crew of two, fully covered from the elements.

Vehicle components are typically low-profile armored combat designs with track and wheel designs that allow for land travel and general maneuverability. The hull, containing the driver's seat and power pack, is of all-welded steel construction.

The forward-leaning panels are very flat for excellent ballistic protection, while the sides, stern and top of the hull remain flat. The turret is located in the central rear of the hull, providing an excellent view of the vehicle. There is a useful entry/exit hatch in the rear of the hull.

The chassis of the PGZ-07 enables a top road speed of 55 km/h and a range of up to 450 km.
