NORINCO ZTL-11 (Type 11)

History

The NORINCO "ZTL-11" is an 8x8 wheeled/self-propelled "assault gun" with built-in amphibious capability. Used by the Chinese Army and Navy, it is a direct variant of the ZBL-08/08 type 8x8 wheeled modular Armored Fighting Vehicle (AFV) family. As an assault gun, the vehicle is designed for direct contact with enemy positions and lightly armored vehicles, and is equipped with a powerful 105mm main gun in its turret.

The drivability of the design provides the terrain support needed to keep up with the main mechanized forces.

The main gun is a 105mm Royal Ordnance L7 main gun of British origin, with a rifled main gun, fully armor-piercing at range, and capable of firing various HE shells at embedded "soft" targets. An optional 12.7mm Heavy Machine Gun (HMG) is also available.

Smoke grenade launchers, six mounted on the side of the turret, give the truck a self-defense function when passing through contested territory.

The car retains all the fine features inherent in the ZBL-08 family, including its full suspension 8x8 wheel arrangement, flat glacis plates and Deutz diesel engine mated to a semi-automatic transmission system. The amphibious qualities enabled the truck to be launched from the coast and landed to continue fighting inland.

China places a high priority on amphibious assault operations, and vehicles like the ZTL-11 fit that pattern.
