History of the Oshkosh Medium Tactical Vehicle Replacement (MTVR)
The Medium Tactical Vehicle Replacement (or "MTVR") is a heavy commercial vehicle manufactured by the Oshkosh Truck Company of Oshkosh, Wisconsin, USA. First used in 1998, the 7-ton truck system was originally designed as a modernized variant of the 5-ton commercial vehicle already in service with the U.S. military. As the project progressed, it was inevitable that the MTVR would become its own new series of 7-ton utility vehicles and be adopted. It has been adopted by the U.S. Navy and Marine Corps units as a standard inventory extension.
For the US Marine Corps, it tows the M777 howitzer. Several variants have emerged from the original design, including dump trucks, standard haulers and special shapes.
The MTVR features a turbocharged diesel engine producing over 400 hp mated to an electronically controlled seven-speed Allison HD 4070P WTEC III automatic transmission. Power drives all six wheels, and the truck is rated for a payload of between 7 and 15 tons, depending on the road surface (meaning more payload can be applied when driving on smoother surfaces). The vehicle can accommodate beds of different sizes behind the cab.
The S-20K Series power winch system with a capacity of 20,000 lbs (9,072 kg) can be seen on some versions. The abundance of variants suggests that MTVR is a well-suited system for important transport tasks. The typical weapon is self-defense using machine guns of various calibers (also any personal weapons carried by the crew).
There are machine gun posts above the cab, although vehicles are often deployed with more combat-oriented systems such as heavy armor and armed Humvees.
The cabin (three-person capacity) is made of extruded welded aluminium with a corrosion-resistant skin bonded with adhesive. A one-piece windshield is standard, as is a spring-loaded driver's seat. Air conditioning is an optional cabin comfort.
The MTVR itself is designed to operate in extreme temperatures ranging from -50 degrees to 125 degrees (F). Other features include a Central Tire Inflation System (CTIS) with preset tire pressure and operator-triggered automatic functions.
Mission kits available for this series include arctic weather kits, machine gun mount kits, chemical alert kits, tire chains kits, and a few others. The MTVR is designed for the heavy-duty Lockheed C-5 Galaxy, Boeing C-17 Globemaster III, Lockheed C-141 Starlift and medium-duty Lockheed C-130 (albeit with some preparation).
Can also be transported by Skikorsky CH-53 heavy helicopter.
MTVR has been in combat service with U.S. troops in theaters of Afghanistan and Iraq.
