History
During World War II (1939-1945), one of the many variants developed for the Wehrmacht from the SdKfz 250 halftrack was the SdKfz 250/8. These vehicles are designed as fire support platforms and are appropriately armed while retaining the inherent capabilities of the SdKfz 250.
They were used until the end of the war in 1945.
The SdKfz 250 was one of many German half-tracks in the conflict, with 6,628 built by Demag, Adlerwerke, Bussing-NAG and MWC from 1941 to 1945. While the armor is light (up to 14.5mm of protection), these vehicles are relatively light in nature and versatile, making them ideal for use as weapons delivery vehicles.
As the German Panzer IV series transitioned to the newer, longer 75mm (7.5cm) main gun KwK 40 series, its original short KwK 37 L/24 75mm guns began to be available in large quantities. This makes the SdKfz 250 the perfect conversion platform for this weapon, which brings the proven Sturmgeschutz range of vehicle mounts.
The end result became the SdKfz 250/8 fire support half-track.
Requires some modifications to the gun and mounting hardware at the rear of the SdKfz 250 chassis, including removal of several passenger seats and front MG34 machine gun mounts to make room for a three-man rifle crew. Keep one 7.92mm MG34 Machine gun, mounted above the howitzer, for main gun training and self-defense. The driver's seat is also retained, and the engine remains in the front compartment. Truck-style wheels control the steering at the front of the vehicle, while the rear is powered by tank-style tracks with overlapping wheels.
The main battery was assigned 20 75mm rounds. Also brought a radio.
The official name of the new car is "Sd. Kfz 250/8 Light Armored Personnel Carrier (7.5 cm)".
At the end of the conversion process, the SdKfz 250/8 reached a weight of 6.3 tonnes, which helped reduce the vehicle's speed both on and off road. The addition of turrets and associated structures also increased the vehicle's profile to over two meters, making it an attractive target for enemy tank killers and the like.
The SdKfz 250/8 vehicle has been in service since 1944 and fought as part of the German light armoured reconnaissance force. Their guns are suitable as anti-infantry and suppression weapons when firing high-explosive (HE) shells, and can threaten lightly armored vehicles from a distance.
Their half-track body also allows for good off-road mobility.
