In 2013, the Singapore Army launched the Spider (New Generation) Light Assault Vehicle Mk II (LSV Mk II) as the successor to the earlier 1998 Young Assault Vehicle Mk I. As the name suggests, the LAV is designed to provide regular and special forces with quick-attack, hit-and-run tactics with a focus on defeating armored threats from a distance. Manufactured by local defense contractor ST Kinetics, the vehicles can be airlifted in the belly of a medium transport helicopter or in the cargo hold of a medium-range fixed-wing transport aircraft.
The Mk II weighs approximately 4,000 pounds and measures 16 feet long, 6.9 feet wide and 5.10 feet high. The operator usually consists of two people, with room for four additional assistants. Drive power comes from a single 4-cylinder PSA DW10B series turbo diesel engine with 136 hp. This engine is paired to a four-speed automatic transmission. The driver sits in the center of the front row, and there are passenger seats to the left, right and rear.
Road speeds hit almost 70 miles per hour.
The Spider is equipped with an anti-roll bar/crew "cage" system to improve crew survivability in the event of a rollover. Crew quarters are usually open air with great views of the surrounding terrain. Wheels are well-spaced, have strong balance characteristics, and have excellent off-road handling.
The chassis also has raised ground clearance.
The central position of the driver's front row, allowing the left and right front passenger positions to be equipped with a 7.62mm general-purpose machine gun. The vehicle also features a trainable overhead mount suitable for anti-tank (Israel's SPIKE anti-tank missiles) or anti-personnel weapons (such as a 40mm automatic grenade launcher).
On-board storage also allows for transport of portable anti-tank weapons such as javelins into battle.
The Spider Mk II was developed into three different production forms, including a universal base model for multi-purpose, an anti-personnel model with a 40mm AGL, and an anti-tank model with the Raphael SPIKE ATGM system (Mantis Support System) installed ).
