History
Supacat Jackal (also known as "MWMIK", also known as "EmWimmick", although an acronym for "Mobility Weapon-Mounted Installation Kit") is currently in service as a mobile multipurpose wheeled weapons platform and an all-terrain reconnaissance vehicle in the British Army. The vehicle is the first to feature a range of military-focused systems from Supacat Group. The base vehicle was specially developed for the British Army service deployed in Afghanistan, where aircrews have repeatedly faced insurgent ambushes and IED (improvised explosive device) attacks. Therefore, Jackal is designed to maximize the survivability of the crew while keeping the vehicle as maneuverable as possible.
Supacat refers to its "HMT" level of Jackal products as the "HMT 400", including the 6x6 version of the "HMT 600" and the Special Forces variant "HMT Extenda". The vehicle is manufactured by the American company Lockheed Martin (with a license).
The jackal is 90 feet long, 6.7 feet wide, and 6.2 feet high. It has a 9.8-foot wheelbase and a whopping 1.6-foot ground clearance (0.60-foot minimum). It has a reported total weight of 16,755 pounds, while being capable of carrying a 4,630-pound mission payload.
The design also includes consideration of clearance near the lower front and lower rear of the vehicle. The vehicle can pass a 60 percent incline and traverse 3.3 feet of water. Due to the open-air nature of the crew area, the rollover is protected by a fixed roll bar structure.
The Jackal has already completed combat service during the British war in Afghanistan. While the vehicle's inherent fire capability and maneuverability have demonstrated good design qualities, enabling it to perform a variety of mission types, including escort and fire support, results have been mixed in terms of crew and enemy IED survivability.
Some 500 cars will eventually fill up the British Army's stockpile in the near future.
The Jackal baseline has been developed to accommodate the Jackal 2 product based on the original Jackal vehicle. The Department of Combat Services requested that the landing gear be strengthened to improve mine protection and expand weapons stowage including fore and aft weapon positions and room for additional crew members. The Jackal also forms the basis of the "Wolf" series of 6x6 wheeled vehicles, designed to be used as multi-purpose "carriers" rather than directly engaging and attacking platforms. A third axle was added to the chassis, while the vehicle retained the off-road capability of the 4x4 version.
Supacat refers to the 6x6 design as the "HMT 600".
The Coyote has a barrel length of 23 feet, a width of 6.7 feet, and a height of 6.2 feet. It has a wheelbase of 14 feet and a maximum ground clearance of 1.6 feet. Total weight is 23,150 lbs and payload is limited to 8,600 lbs. Road speeds reach 75 mph and road range is up to 435 miles. The vehicle can also ford up to 3.3 feet of water and has a climb rating of up to 60 percent.
Power is provided by a 180-horsepower Cummins 6-cylinder diesel engine mated to a 5-speed automatic transmission, backed by 2/4-wheel drive. Run-flat tires, recovery winches and RWS are also optional.
The chassis can also be used as a mobile (wheeled) missile launcher, and a closed cockpit and crew compartment can also be ordered.
HMT "Extenda" is another (related) 4x4/6x6 offering from Supacat for special forces. The third axis is removable, while the overall design is intended to be a highly modular version of the Jackal series, offering the essential benefits of the standard HMT 400 and HMT 600 series (including lightning protection and air transport).
