The History of TATA Motors LAMV (Light Armored Multipurpose Vehicle)

The TATA LAMV (Light Armored Multipurpose Vehicle), unveiled at DEFEXPO 2014, was developed by Indias TATA Motors for the security and defence market although its main customer is believed to be the Indian Army. In other conflicts in recent years, the Iraq and Afghanistan wars have shown a huge need for such protected vehicles to counter the threat of small arms fire, shrapnel and concealed explosive devices in urban combat environments. The LAMV is designed to counter these threats with an all-encompassing protection system consisting of ceramic/composite armor, separate crew compartment, blast-proof "V-shaped" hull and ballistic-resistant windshield.

In addition, both crew members (which can accommodate up to four other passengers) are seated in "mine-protected" seats. The core of the LAMV is for armed reconnaissance, patrolling and convoy protection.

The LAMV is primarily an indigenous Indian armored vehicle development, assisted in the design phase by the British group SUPACAT. This continues the growing trend of India's military industry and encourages internal solutions to Indian military problems.

The LAMV is mounted on a full suspension (independent) chassis with rubber tire wheels at each extreme corner of the vehicle. Ground clearance is especially high for good off-road quality, traversing shallow water sources and keeping the hull away from potential mine explosions.

The engine is traditionally housed in the front cabin, and the driver's seat forms part of the front seats. The doors are hinged in automotive style and feature thick windows that provide occupants with great situational awareness. The rear of the vehicle features a two-door arrangement with additional access to a flat rear compartment.

This compartment can be used to carry additional mission gear if needed. Gun emplacements are optional and are mounted on the superstructure roof with an impressive 360 ??degree traverse of the vehicle.

The unit is equipped with a 12.7mm heavy machine gun and point defense armor for partially exposed operators. The vehicle is also expected to support Indian Army 7.62mm machine guns and automatic grenade launchers.

Notably, the passenger compartment is fully detachable from the vehicle chassis, which facilitates repairs and serves as an additional survival feature by blasting the module out of the vehicle in the event of an explosion.

Performance specs include a top road speed of nearly 65 mph. The diesel-powered engine is paired with an automatic transmission system. Dimensions include a length of 5.5 meters, a width of 2.5 meters and a height of 2.3 meters to the body's roofline.

The vehicle weighs 17,640 pounds and falls under the "light" classification.
