History
Logistics remains at the heart of any military operation. Large-scale armies like the modern Russian Army know this well and deploy a large number of logistics-oriented vehicles to support most ground operations. One of the troops' tools was the Ural-5323, an 8x8 military truck that entered mass production in 1989 at the end of the Cold War.
Despite its Cold War origins, it is still actively produced today (2018).
The truck has four axles, each with two wheels, and these axles are divided into two pairs, front and rear. The wheels are large, giving the vehicle excellent ground clearance, making off-road driving easier. Above the front of the truck is the crew compartment, with the driver sitting in the front left. Early production models featured cabs made by KAMAZ, while later models switched to a new cab design developed with the support of Iveco, Italy.
The engine is located at the front of the design, and the rear is accommodated by the truck chassis, which is generally unaffected by the elements. Up to 10 tons of cargo can be transported in this area, and trucks can tow 16 tons if necessary.
Other truck features include a remote tire pressure monitoring system and leaf spring suspension.
The unit is powered by a 300 hp (2,000 rpm) YaMZ-238B V-8 turbo diesel engine. This works with an 8x2 drivetrain with a transaxle locking differential. The truck can reach a top speed of 53 mph and has a range of 650 miles. For overland travel, these figures are slightly reduced.
The Ural-5323 series has also been modified to carry the Pantsir-S1 airspace denial weapon system (introduced in 2012). This powerful arrangement envisions a powerful combination of missiles and automatic cannons for an air defense (AA) role.
The Ural-5232 increases the maneuverability required for the system to comfortably accommodate three people.
Other vehicle types using the Ural-5323 frame include the Ural-532362 riot vehicle equipped with a powerful anti-personnel water cannon. This model also includes skirt armor on the rear axle pairing and grille covers on all front window trims.
There is also a bulldozer in the bow for destroying barricades. There is also a civilian version of the truck with the headlights moved from the front to the bumper.
