VCC Camerino Story

Italy already maintains thousands of licensed American M113 APCs from OTO Melara, so it is no surprise that Italy has decided to further develop the system and modify it as needed. The resulting system was called the VCC-1 "Camillino" and served the same role as the M113 in the Italian army.

Changes to the base system of the M113 include a redesign of the rear fuselage section. While the original M113's 12.7 MG cupola lacked armor protection and provided no launch ports for passengers, the VCC-1 addressed these shortcomings in a sloping armored upper hull with two launch ports on each side and two control tops Mount 12, 7mm machine guns and 7.62mm machine guns mounted to the rear hull.

Externally, the VCC-1 still retains its visual similarity to the M113 - most notably the front of the fuselage, but basically everything else is pure Italian design.

The driver's position is his own dome at the front on the left side of the design. The commander sat right behind the driver, dome. The 12.7mm primary weapon is mounted on the commander's far right powered cupola. Periscopes are mounted on each dome to help with vision issues inside the car.

The passenger area accommodates up to seven combat-ready personnel and facilitates embarkation and disembarkation via a large powered rear ramp.

VCC comes in several forms, including the installation of additional armor and a 20mm gun. According to reports, about 1,000 Camillinos were produced. Saudi Arabia retains some anti-tank VCCs that are similar in nature to the role played by the M113 conversion model known as the "M901 Improved TOW Vehicle" or M901 ITV in the U.S. Army inventory.

These VCCs similarly mount the TOW anti-tank missile launch system on top of the fuselage.
