The Story of Walid Gomaa Mohamed

In the 1960s, the Egyptian army invested in a new armoured vehicle based on their experience with the Soviet-era BTR-40 4x4 wheeled reconnaissance vehicle and the BTR-152 6x6 wheeled armoured personnel carrier (APC). The result is the "Walid Gomaa Mohamed" (better known as "Walid"), which combines the chassis of a West German Mercedes-Benz UNIMOG truck (detailed elsewhere on this page) with a locally designed armored hull structure . The car was built under the banner of the "Arab Organization of Industrialization" (AOI) Khadr factory.

Walid was designed as a reconnaissance vehicle/APC, but evolved into other required roles, including a command vehicle (CV) (with additional communications equipment), a riot vehicle, a government security force vehicle, and a multiple launch vehicle missile system (MLRS) ). In the latter version, a 6- or 12-round rocket launcher package is mounted on the rear of the vehicle and contains 80mm rockets in separate launch tubes, while the typical crew is 2 people.

The Walid Scout base car measures 6.12 x 2. 57x2. 3 meters. The ground clearance is 0.4 meters, allowing the vehicle to wade into water at a depth of 0.8 meters, climb vertical slopes of 0.5 meters, and climb 60% inclines. The standard combat crew consists of two people, and a 7.62mm PKM or similar medium machine gun is usually used for local defense. The armor reaches 8mm of steel, which protects against small arms fire, but hardly any.

In addition to a crew of 2, the vehicle can accommodate up to 10 combat-ready infantrymen and, depending on the build, the Walid is available in either a soft-top or hard-top form to suit the mission role or customer requirements. Driving power is a 168 hp Deutz AG diesel engine, which gives the Walid a top speed of 86 km/h and a range of up to 800 km.

Walid cars have found many operators worldwide and have proven long and healthy lives. The list used to include Angola, Algeria, Iraq, North Yemen (now Yemen) and the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO), while the current operators remain Burundi, Sudan and Yemen.

During the Six Day War (1967), the Israeli army seized several cars from Egypt.
