DIO Fajr-5 (Dawn-5)

History

In addition to a wide variety of main battle tanks and support vehicles, the modern Iranian army also has a large number of towed and self-propelled guns. For the latter, this includes two locally developed and produced Multiple Launch Rocket Systems (MRLS) in the form of "Fajr-3" and

"Fajr-5" ("Fajr" means "dawn"). Both are subject to foreign supplies North Korea and China, respectively and their battlefield missiles are 240mm and 333mm caliber, respectively.

Fajr-3 is described elsewhere on this page. Fajr-5 is the focus of this article.

Development of the Fajr-5 began as early as the late 1980s and early 1990s, after the newer WS-1 family of battlefield missiles began to be imported into Iran from allied China. The missiles are ultimately manufactured by local Iranian industries, simplifying logistics and procurement.

The vehicle part of the weapon system becomes a Mercedes-Benz industrial truck with a 6x6 wheel arrangement. At the rear of the frame is a four-shot rocket launcher assembly. At the bow is the wheelhouse, which can accommodate three crew members.

An additional crew compartment is located at the rear, giving the operator full control. The vehicle weighs 1,500 kg.

The chassis provides excellent ground clearance and strong round/off-road capability. The four support arms are lowered to better stabilize the vehicle before launch.

The system can then reposition to fire again within a short period of time - making it difficult to locate and neutralize the target.

Rocket launcher assembly can be trained in launch orientation. It has an elevation range of 0 to 57 degrees and can be trained at 45 degrees on either side of the midline. The rate of fire of all four missiles leaving the launcher is estimated to be four to eight seconds.

The 6.5-meter-long rockets weigh 915 kilograms each and have a range of up to 75 kilometers. In early 2017, a guided version of the same missile was unveiled, bringing more tactical value to the Fajr-5 system as a whole.

Payloads can range from general high explosives (HI-FRAG) to infantry, biological, chemical and nuclear payloads.

The weapon system is manufactured by the Aerospace Industries Organization (AIO), Sanam Industries Group (SIG) and Defense Industry Organization (DIO) companies and by members of Hamas, Hezbollah, Libya (former operator) Distributed outside Iran. , Palestine and Syria.
