IRIN Jamaran (76) History
Little is known in the West about the lead ships of the Jamalan-class guided missile frigates serving the Iranian Navy (formerly the Islamic Republic of Iran). The frigate was launched sometime in 2006 and officially launched on February 19, 2010 in state media reports. Her home port is strategically located outside Bandar Bandar Abbas at the mouth of the Persian Gulf.
It was recently announced on Iranian television that the Iranian navy would conduct voyages in Atlantic waters - as close to the United States as any Iranian ship in recent memory.
The Jamaran is said to be equipped with the latest available detection, location and communications equipment, as well as airborne electronic warfare equipment. The arrival of the Jamaran is noteworthy as it represents the first Iranian destroyer/frigate to be designed and produced locally and is seen in Iran as one of the country's greatest technological achievements. However, its exact capabilities in the field remain unproven, and most of the technology is likely to be based on Russian or Chinese designs.
In any case, the arrival of IRIN Jamaran is an advantage for the Iranian naval presence in the Middle East - it expands the capabilities of the force to a certain extent.
So far, some specifications have been published (or estimated by experts), including a top speed of 30 knots in ideal conditions, a crew of between 120 and 140 officers and men, and a hull length of about 308 feet. Displacement is said to be in the 1,400-ton range.
The Jamaran has a helipad, supporting the idea that the ship will support rotorcraft in and out - presumably a Navy-type US Bell 212 series helicopter optimized for an anti-ship role.
In terms of armament, the Jamaran is reported to have the latest in naval artillery fire, guided surface-to-air and surface-to-surface missiles, and torpedoes. She was armed with a dual-purpose 76mm deck gun and 40mm Fass and 20mm Oerlikon anti-aircraft guns for close range work. There are C-802 series of surface-to-surface missile launchers that fight against enemy ships as Fajr surface-to-air missile launchers to deal with aerial threats.
The armament consists of two triple 324mm torpedo tubes.
Although the Jamaran is classified as a "destroyer" in the Iranian Navy, it is technically considered a "frigate" type ship in the West due to its displacement.
