IRIN Sahand (F-74) History

IRIN Sahand (F-74) is a new addition to the Islamic Republic of Iran (IRIN) fleet. This type belongs to the top seven Mochi class. At present (2018), 3 ships have been built, 2 ships are in active service, and 4 ships are under construction.

The class is said to be designed, developed and built entirely locally - a marked change from IRIN's heavy reliance on foreign (mostly Soviet) naval wartime supplies a few decades ago.

This class consists of the named ships Jamaran (F-76), Damavand (F-77), Dena and Sahand (F-74), and at the time of writing (2018) three more ships have not been named. All are designed to be 1,650 ton standard with an overall length of 311.6 feet, a beam of 36.5 feet and a draft of 10.7 feet.

IRIN Sahand was launched in 2012 and was officially launched on 1st December 2018. Her home port is Bandar Abbas on Iran's southern edge (with access to the region's important Persian Gulf waterway, the strait). Hormuz).

These boats follow a modern, proven stealth design with as few external protrusions as possible (board sides are common in today's designs). Above the forecastle in position "A" is a deck gun with turret, directly behind it is a stepped hull structure. The superstructure has a continuous line that extends before the spiral helipad. The smoke funnel is flat and integrated into the superstructure. The main mast is behind the bridge section, but relies on an older lattice structure (rather than a fully enclosed lattice structure).

Various radars, communications and sensors are installed amidships. The helipad is located in the traditional area at the extreme end of the battleship and can accommodate a Bell 214 or similar helicopter.

The aircraft can be equipped as a basic transport or anti-submarine warfare (ASW) role - providing much-needed submarine hunting capabilities or a critical "eye in the sky".

There are about 140 crew members on board. With resupply support, they can stay at sea for up to 150 days.

Installed power includes 4 turbines delivering 10,000 hp to 2 shafts under the stern. There are also 4 diesel generators providing an additional 740 hp. Top speed is estimated at 30 knots, which is fast by modern frigate standards.

The battleship is equipped with ballistic (projectile) and missile weapons: the deck gun is a 76mm Fajr-27 series automatic cannon. 4 x Multiple Surface-to-Air Missiles (SAM) and 4 x Noor or 8 x Qader anti-ship missiles are installed.

For close-range AA defense, there are 1 x 40mm Fath-40 and 1 x 20mm Oerlikon AA rapid-fire guns. 2 x 324mm triple torpedo tubes can be used to deal with both surface and underwater threats. For extreme close range work there are 2 x 12.7mm Heavy Machine Guns (HMG).

On paper, the Sahand is well-armed and has a wide range of weapons, with estimated performance figures on par with contemporary Western products. Local state television made it clear that the ship's active capabilities include "stealth" capabilities and advanced survival/assault systems.
