History

The modern Chinese military relies on the HQ-22 missile complex to build a medium and long-range air defense network. Known locally as "Red Banner-22", it consists of a launch vehicle/carrier, radar system and missile section.

Typically, three launchers are deployed with a single radar unit, each carrying four missiles, providing considerable coverage from the group's twelve available launches.

The missile component of the HQ-22 system, introduced in 2017, weighs 2,865 pounds, is 22.9 feet long, 2.3 feet in diameter, and has a 400-pound warhead. Its blast system is based on impact or approach, powered by solid rocket motors that propel the projectile to an extreme altitude of 88,500 feet over a range of 105 miles.

Guidance to targets is via semi-active radar homing/radio commands.

Hanyang HY4330 8x8 wheel military truck (manufactured by Hanyang Special Vehicle Research Institute, China) constitutes the vehicle component of the HQ-22 missile system. It has a cab design with the bow suspended from the chassis frame. There are two front and two rear axles, each powered by a 540-horsepower German Deutz BF12L513C diesel engine.

The vehicle weighs 16 tons and has an overall length of 30.1 feet, a width of 9.19 feet and a height of 12.3 feet. It has an unladen range of 620 miles and a road speed of 45 mph in ideal conditions.

In the Chinese inventory, the HQ-22 has been modernized in the HQ-22B lineup with increased attack speed and range. A stronger brand program named HQ-22C has improved performance across all spectrums. The export version of the complex, designated "FK-3", had a slightly reduced range (95 miles).

Outside China, as of April 2022, known operators include Myanmar, Serbia, Thailand and Turkmenistan.
