History

The Snatch Land Rover was first produced in 1992, pre-designating the 110 Defender as the Wolf platform between 1994 and 1998. The design is based on a modified heavy-duty Land Rover XD platform, on which the Wolf is also based.

The Land Rover 300 TDI engine also makes an appearance in the Wolf, at least in later models with dodgy timing belts etc. Earlier models switched to a V8 petrol engine.

The Snatch is based on the Land Rover heavy duty chassis, a militarized version of the Defender 110 (also used in the Land Rover Wolf). It was originally procured for Northern Ireland by the British Army and first introduced in 1992.

Officially known as Truck Utility Medium (TUM) with Vehicle Protection Kit (VPK), even in official documents the vehicle is known by its informal name "Snatch". It's thought to have taken its name from its use in riots, when it was the vehicle of choice for snatch squads: soldiers trained to respond to demonstrations by locating and arresting suspicious ringleaders.

The Snatch was the first factory-modified Land Rover to see action in Northern Ireland, replacing a number of makeshift modifications, including an armoured Airport Land Rover (Land Rover 1/2 ton light) and a 109" (known as the "Piggy" , a smaller version of the Humber Pig armoured personnel carrier) was then widely used by the British Army in Northern Ireland.

CAMAC CAV 100, manufactured by NP Aerospace, the "snatch" conversion was developed with the help of Ricardo and features CAMAC composite armor to protect the crew from kinetic projectiles and at a very limited range Internally protected from anti-explosive devices. It has a rated "combat weight" (excluding crew and weapons) of 3,050kg.
