History of the Land Rover Defender 110
The Defender 110 was manufactured by British Land Rover for military use. The British Army and some Commonwealth countries have been using Land Rover's range of SUVs since the 1950s.
As such, the type actually harks back to early production models used since 1948, and the series has earned a reputation for providing excellent off-road capability in a variety of operating environments.
The Defender 110 (originally called "Defender Ten" in Land Rover marketing materials) has full permanent 4x4 wheel drive capability and a center-based limited-slip differential. The Defender chassis uses coil spring suspension instead of the leaf spring mounts common in older "Series" type variants.
The association with the more powerful and economical 200Tdi and 300Tdi engines officially cemented the Defender's preference value in the military market - a preference that continues today in remote areas like Afghanistan.
Special Projects handled the British Army's military contract for the Defender 110. The result is a V-8 powered, Rapier-equipped mobile missile launch platform.
The Rapier system actually consists of a row of three Defender vehicles working together (two carry special equipment and personnel, while the third provides the necessary rocket launchers and targeting equipment).
A major significant disadvantage of the Defender 110 is its limited occupant protection for the driver and all passengers (the US military's HUMVEES has a similar complaint), exposing occupants to the very real danger of improvised roadside bombs (IEDs) in the aftermath of being exposed on the battlefield). Additionally, the operation of the Defender 110 vehicle and its counterpart depends on mobility and off-line operations.
Its dimensions allow vehicles to reach areas inaccessible to oversized vehicles or to be airlifted to mission areas. Defender supports the role of transport and ambulances and other priorities including rapid reconnaissance.
