History of the BMW R61
To support Germany's war effort in World War II (1939-1945), the military sought all viable types of motorcycles for military service. The BMW R61 model is an example of a civilian market form of direct military service in the dispatcher role.
The R61 was produced on a limited basisprocurement took place from 1938 to 1941as it proved to be expensive to manufacture. They are also considered quite large for agile work. In total, less than 4,000 were built.
Power comes from a 597cc, 18hp, 2-cylinder, 4-stroke engine mounted under a 14-liter fuel tank. This ensures road speeds around 115 km/h. The R61 is the first BMW motorcycle to be equipped with rear-wheel suspension for even greater ride comfort.
