History of Practika Kozak
The "Kozak" is a Ukrainian four-wheel drive armored personnel carrier (APC) designed in 2008-2009. It features a proven "V-shaped" hull that enhances protection against mines and explosives. The APC can accommodate a crew of 5, including the driver, and can be equipped with mission-specific weapons or equipment. Mass production began in 2014 under the NPO Practika brand, following the completion of two trucks in 2009.
Powered by a nose-mounted diesel engine producing 176 hp, the Kozak has a top speed of 120 km/h. It utilizes large road tires for improved traction and offers high ground clearance for on-road and off-road capabilities. The vehicle has light armor protection, typical for this type of vehicle, with bullbars, recessed and protected headlights, and bulletproof windows.
Access to and from the APC is through automotive-style hinged doors on the sides, with the front opening forward and the rear opening backward, creating a protected space for occupants to exit under fire. If armed, the NSV machine gun is usually mounted on top of the hull in a partially closed turret position. Smoke grenade launchers can also be added for monitoring vehicle movements.
The Kozak has different variants, including the "Kozak SRM-1," a simple 4x4 chassis based on the Italian Iveco "Daily" truck, and the "Kozak-2," a universal MRAP with IED-level protection, using the Iveco "Eurocargo" chassis. The "Kozak-2M" can be retrofitted for various battlefield roles, such as convoys, ambulances, and protected personnel carriers. The "Kozak-4" (based on the Daily Iveco) is a general-purpose APC, while the "Kozak-5" is designed for special forces and special police units in Ukraine, using a Ford F550 truck chassis.
The Kozak-2 model was adopted by the Armed Forces of Ukraine in 2017, with 100 units procured. Apart from Ukraine, the APC is also operated by Indonesia (two vehicles for testing) and Bangladesh.
