Hagglunds Bandvagn BvS 10 History
Viking (BvS10) is a fully amphibious armoured all-terrain vehicle consisting of two tracked vehicle units connected by a steering mechanism. The UK Ministry of Defence has ordered 108 Vikings from BAE Systems, Land Systems Hagglunds (formerly Alvis Hagglunds) in three variants: Troop Carrier Vehicle (TCV), Command Vehicle (CV) and Repair Recovery Vehicle (RCV).
Originally designed and named Viking for the Royal Marines, the vehicle underwent an extensive testing and development programme led by Major Jez Hermer MBE RM between 2001 and 2004, after which the Royal Marines put 108 vehicles Commissioned and deliveries began in 2005. The Royal Marines Armoured Support Company began operating the vehicle in Afghanistan in September 2006, before forming the Royal Marines Armoured Support Group in December 2007.
The BvS10 vehicle was developed based on the proven performance of the Swedish Hagglunds Bv206 and Bv206S vehicles. In 2017, more than 11,000 vehicles entered service in 40 countries.
Viking is equipped with a more powerful engine, bigger and faster than Bv206S, with greater load capacity.
Some of the bodies are manufactured at Land Systems' manufacturing facility in Telford, UK, while final production and assembly is carried out at Land Systems Hagglunds' facility in Ornskolsvik, Sweden. The vehicles will enter service after 2031.
