History

The Allen Control Systems Bullfrog is an autonomous robotic weapon station developed in the United States to counter unmanned aerial systems. It combines conventional firearms with artificial intelligence, computer vision, and precision robotics.

The system detects, tracks, identifies, and aims at aerial threats such as drones. Its use of widely available ammunition is intended to provide a lower-cost kinetic alternative to missile interceptors.

The Bullfrog family supports several firearms, while the Bullfrog M240 combines the robotic mount with the 7.62 mm M240 machine gun. The United States Marine Corps selected this configuration for planned integration with the Light Marine Air Defense Integrated System.

Development and testing

Allen Control Systems developed Bullfrog in response to the expanding use of inexpensive and increasingly resilient drones. The company was founded by Steven Simoni, Luke Allen, and Mike Wior, whose backgrounds include naval nuclear engineering, robotics, machine learning, and control systems.

From 19 to 26 August 2024, Bullfrog participated in the United States Department of Defense Technology Readiness Experimentation exercise TREX 24-2 at Camp Atterbury, Indiana. According to the company announcement, the system completed repeated demonstrations, including engagements against multiple drones in rapid succession. The M240-equipped system demonstrated the autonomous detect, track, identify, and defeat sequence.

Subsequent military activity included a United States Army Applications Laboratory contract to assess Bullfrog installations on five Army combat vehicles. Allen Control Systems also received a contract to integrate the system with United States special operations maritime platforms. Bullfrog was later validated through Joint Interagency Task Force 401, according to published program information.

Marine Corps selection

In July 2026, the United States Marine Corps selected the Bullfrog M240 under its Ground Based Air Defense program. The initial contract was reported at approximately $6.2 million. Integration with L-MADIS is planned through a prototype Other Transaction Agreement.

L-MADIS is an expeditionary counter-drone system based on two Polaris MRZR all-terrain vehicles. One vehicle serves as a command element, while the other carries an electronic-warfare suite. Design

Bullfrog is a powered robotic mount that converts a conventional firearm into a counter-drone weapon station. Computer vision and artificial-intelligence software process sensor information, track a moving target, and calculate the weapon's aim. Precision robotic controls then adjust the firearm to follow the target.

The design is intended to work with both legacy and modern firearms. This modular approach allows the system to use established weapons and ammunition rather than a dedicated interceptor. Bullfrog M240

The company states that the M240 configuration can engage small unmanned aircraft and larger drone targets. Published company information gives an upper target mass of approximately 599 kg (1,320 lb). Actual engagement performance depends on the target, ammunition, sensor data, and operating conditions.

Allen Control Systems has advertised a cost per successful engagement as low as $10. This is a manufacturer claim based mainly on the use of machine-gun ammunition and should not be interpreted as the complete procurement or operating cost of the system.

Program status

Published reports state that Bullfrog has been deployed with the United States Army and Navy and evaluated by allied military customers. The available sources do not provide quantities, unit assignments, or detailed deployment dates.
